Is it me, or this game is unplayable with a Xbox controller?

I'm using a xbox 360 pc controller, and it feels like I have no accurate control over my character when trying to do the different combos.

I play with a xbox controller too. Sometimes i fail simple moves like hadoukens ( happens a lot and i get punished for that) , sometimes do things i dont want to do ( more rarely ) .
I know im not a great player but i think the xbox controller is not really good for SF.
Is not unplayable but make things harder

I agree that it's horrible to play with the D-Pad of the 360 controller. It's really annoying, because I generate "random" inputs with it, like jumps when I don't even want to jump. Is the D-Pad of the Xbone controller better? I read there will be Windows drivers for it soon.

pad's in general are fine for fighting games, but I hear a lot of really bad things about the x360 controller + had my poor experiences, even with spending a nice amount of time with it. the D-Pad is one of the worst experiences I've had with a controller to date.

Depends on the character. Pads are good for countering, but when it comes to complex combo's and some of the more advanced moves, there's no question you will need a fight stick.

Some of the pro's do fight with pad though. But you will notice that he holds it like an arcade stick.

this has been a huge complaint since vanilla SFIV launched forever ago. 360 dpad is just ♥♥♥♥♥.
i was fortunate back then to be able to afford a fight stick, but i too struggled with the dpad before i got it. i also didn't like the LS cause it felt too squirly and slow.

i'd just google it. find the best alternative to a fight stick.

I prefer using both left stick and d-pad to play fighting games, mainly use d-pad so I prefer PS3 controller over Xbox controller.

That's something that annoyed me to no end, which prompted me to mod it as shown on the previous page; seriously mitigates that aspect quite a lot, I'd definitely say go for it; only costs you a pringles top (or as in the vid a piece of paper) and is completely reversible if somehow you don't feel it is an improvement.
Might want to have a 'security' torx screwdriver though (you can make a regular one work, but you'll have to break the security pin in the middle of the top of the screw with something like a small flathead).

When I play on a 360 pad, I use the joystick and not the D-pad. You don't need to dash everywhere in SF4 so using the joystick is ok, especially since the input leniency in SF4 is very forgiving.

So I'm not the only one? That's a relief. Pulling the ultras is so frustrating and the input doesn't register in a lot of situations, I can't pull off certain chain combos and the character just stops afer a certain set of moves. Really really frustrating.

its not unplayable, just unreliable and certain combos dont register well

You just have to get used to it. I once tried using a fight stick and couldn't even do a hadouken lol. It's just what you're comfortable with I guess. Anyone that says you can't do combos is wrong, I've done a few combo videos with PS3 controller, 360 controller etc. no problems and can do them consistently. I'm sick of people saying this game is unplayable with a controller

Liar is such a strong word for such a subjective thing. Unplayable means not fun to play. People are fine with 15 FPS on their games too, while others call it unplayable. People are fine with random analprobing from TSA at US airports, while others call it unacceptable. It is a expression of personal view.
