That are really different games. You can't compare them so easily.

I had the same question. I bought this one. This games "personality" is just really fun. If your more Sheldon-like, then Factorio.

Very different games, better comparison is this and rimworld. But even so it's different. I would personally recommend factorio because the state of the game is near finished. one playthrough can easily net 200 hours.

I haven't picked up RimWorld yet, but I've clocked a lot of hours in ONI and Factorio.

Either way, getting both is worth it.

I like ONI more than Factorio.

Not that Factorio isn't cool... but the devs don't seem to be doing much on it any more, and the aerial drones kind of ruin all challenge in the game

both are cool with some "overall gameplay" variations:

- factorio tend to be less punitive with default setting // pre planning, base re-arrangement

- it also use to have less delay "feelings" when rearranging your base and thing
(in factorio the delay feelings mostly come from the research tree, sometime it took age to unlock some specific stuff you need while in oni it's wise to focus unlock without much duplicant to manage on base start than later on)

- mid late game factorio "actually" tend to be more about expanding your train network, finding ressource far away and feeding your production lines
( and while the space outpost update is not yet there)
In oni you will more need to find a way to replace the early "not infinite map/boundless" grind, per recycling, balance and equilibrium process as your colony grow (energy & clean water //all the rest ; thoose two ; as main expansion limitator mostly)

- factorio is a bit more oriented on alien nest farming and killing stuff, mid late game and especially since they added endless research level for some specific thing in the research tree

- multiplayer
(well, i m out i don't no longer multi play, and i have totally personnal, subjective and silly reasonZzzzzZzzzzZzzzz for such)

- while oni is more oriented on saving wisely the very few map mob that help you lot if "domesticated and combined wisely" (either with some other mobs either with some specific liquid or airs, and micro managing the many various different networks balance, equilibrium and expansion and duplicant health, plus monitoring, both duplicants, current needs and needs to come not to meet a dead end

(( factorio is also a great game, but it's different i recommand both anyway ^^))

Both are great games but I personally enjoy ONI a lot more.

Factorio is very linear and, once you figure out a good base layout, the playthrough's are generally all the same. So, unless you enjoy speedrunning or going for Steam achievements, it's pretty much beat it once and that's that. If you go in with basic knowledge of the game, a full playthrough as a beginner will probably take you around 20 hours (unless you backseat the objective and really drag it out). You can probably get another 2 or 3 playthrough's before it starts to get old.

So, while Factorio has been around a lot longer and, thus, has more content, there isn't as much replay value (at least for me). I'm sure there are people who would disagree but I actually just tried picking it up again after about a year long break and it felt exactly the same; I just couldn't get back into it as I knew exactly how the game would play out.

The one thing Factorio definitely has over ONI is multiplayer support; which is great if you have people to play with. It also has a combat element which can be pretty fun and challenging on higher difficulty settings.

ONI, on the other hand, is centered around experiementation and has more of a laid-back, colony management sandbox vibe with some survival elements. There are currently no objectives and no way to "beat" the game. The beginning basically consists of creating a self-sustaining base, which doesn't take long, and the rest is subject to your own creativity. I find restarting in ONI to be much more fun as there are quite a few RNG elements that make each playthrough unique.

Keep in mind that it's a young game and it has a ways to go before it's flesh out but the potential is staggering and the devs have a great track record.

So, if you enjoy colony management, experiementing and being creative, I'd say give ONI a try.

If you want a more linear base design game with specific goals and multiplayer support, I'd say go with Factorio.

Both are great and both are worth it.

Rimworld is on my to play list but I've played a lot of Prison Architect. PA is great but I spend to much time pause and not playing.

Factorio is something I'm not sure how well I would take to it. I didn't enjoy other games that seem similar to it. I have played Big Pharma and SpaceChem and didn't keep playing those past a few hours. I was expecting to really like them though so I was suprised.

If you have played Craft the World the interaction with the dupes will feel similar. ONI doesn't have castable player abilities like "spells" but CtW did. ONI is a lot faster paced especially early game. Late game ONI can drag on since your base is bigger and has more jobs to do. CtW really fixed that long game drag with spells.

Though not a lot of people have played CtW. So maybe if Starbound/Terraria and Gnomoria had a baby...

and what about:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/92800/SpaceChem/

i m curious to see who can reach "all" the opti produce lines set up for each steps and their variations their ; ) xDr

may be ONi is overall more like space chem with a more player funny ("freedom friendly") gameplay, "light funny" (<= this is subjectively relative in all absolute) toons micromanaging additional approach instead of focusing only the opti lines challenge brainstroming like space chem does, so not totally and fully challenge and opti overall oriented with a non neglectable touch of freedomness as long as you pre-plan updgrade dynamically wisely ^^

(dyamical updgrade aspect noticeably inexistent in space chem for exemple, the interest there come from some some other aspects)

a yup yup "prison architect" and "rimworld", thoose two guy are doing some great work, true true ; ) rimworld is kinda interesting with the tower defense aspect kinda like "dig or die"

Rim world is survival with rng elements. You try to rebuild in a devastated world and some deaths are rng.

ONI is survival with science/physics elements. The idea is to expand your base while not overextend the use of your do called "limited" resources. 80pct of the issues you encounter are your fault and 20pct are bugs.

ant farm vs lego constuction set

one has sandbox emergement gameplay, the other more calculated and planned, almost incremental like
