Attacks are relentless by day 40. Any tips?
Right now I have those holy swords, crossbows, a few loot/quest items and 12 survivors. Keeping them all organized and attacking (would LOVE an "Attack this area" button like any RTS) is difficult as it is, but right now with 2x hellgates destroyed and my base defended, I still get swamped by 4 waves of ghosts/possessed/demons every four or five days, max.

I haven't really utilized any of the magic system whatsoever. Anything I should be doing in my base during times of peace to prepare, or do anything to ward them off?

good base defenses helps lots I had same trouble made a kill zone with fortifcations helped lots. I took advantage of the fact some defenses block movement and some block range made kill zones. wall off soon you can ajust it when your not getting swarmed. the barrels are easy to build so get to metals fast helps. the towers add 2 to range check range on your weapon and place couple towers in spot where you can shoot and they cant. good luck and have fun

I'n having troubles in this game compared to others (Rimworld, eg) due to the range of fallen angels and them just plinking away at me over my barricades. I've tried a killbox by walling off my base then having an entrance fortified that they have to attack head on, but their dps is much higher and range is much higher than mine. It's hard to quarantine and kill off swarms of enemies when I, myself, am just using compounds + a couple coil guns + holy swords for melee.

I'm having different problems. I went to the hellgate once, back when I only had crossbows/quarterstaffs/clubs, saw it was way over my head and went back to slowly build up for it. As a result, my rescue missions just jumped in difficulty ridiculously to the point where I'd just skip them repeatedly (counting about 70 enemies including about 15 fallen angels from the get go). Yet, the scouting parties I take out and the occasional raiding enemies are nothing more than 3 or 4 imps/fire imps/minor demons total.

I'm thinking I screwed this game up somehow by being too cautious about the hellgate, working my way up to advanced firearms to take it, but am stuck with being unable to rescue further survivors (I did go on one mission recently, it had 0 fallen angels advertised and only about 58 enemies...but when all was done it was about 74 enemies with 4 supporting Fallen Angels...and miraculously my team survived).

Put spikes around your entire base, limiting it to only one entrance. Build a long maze-like path for the enemies to tunnel down. This will give you time to move your survivors into position. Have the pathway lead to an area somewhere near the middle of your camp where you can have sniper towers and sandbags. I'm on day 127 and I've never had a single survivor get injured by an enemy using this strategy.

you just do NOT have the range needed to make it much easier for around day 40 ish. :(
Rushing that long range rifle at the bottom of the weapon tech tree is a must.

At least it was in the previous version i played, i still haven't gotten to the end game yet in this latest playthrough of the Traders Update. So maybe there is another option now...

Magic is very benificial. The rituals give tempory buffs, that can turn the tide of battle in your favour. Some even increase map movement speed, thats a must for me so i can explore more in less time.
While spells and magical items can be better to use with survivors who have damage bonuses with those things.

You should look into them since its pretty easy to research them and cast most of those rituals.

Also foods have diferent buffs as well that stack with the buffs from rituals.

good luck, sorry i wasn't much help at all.

the difficulty scales with number of survivors. I've stopped getting new survivors unless i think its gonna be easy.. i have 18 atm (day 60 something). really don't need more and getting more will ramp up the difficulty another notch.

The magic is useful, but after ordering the buffs, it takes them half a day to cast them and they won't cast them while your on the world map, you have to be looking at your camp, and so alot of the time i find i send my taskforce out.. and half way thru thier mission one buff will go off, i'll get an injury and head back to town before the 2nd buff has been casted and its just messy and doesn't often line up with being used. But when they do work, they work quite well.

build kill zone, tower entrapment zones, make use of each of the 3fortications,spikes, sandbags n barrels. look at the ranges of your ranged weapons. crossbow in tower is only range 8. olympic bow in tower is range 10
