Controversy erupts over leaked Funimation audio with incest jokes

Over the weekend, English voice performers Sean Schemmel (Son Goku) and Chris Sabat (Vegeta, Piccolo, Yamcha) and others were leaked reciting insensitive jokes of certain DBZ characters. Many speculate that because this violates Funimation's Term of Service, that certain voice performers or the company, Funimation, should lose the license to dub the Dragonball franchise.

It should be noted that many feel that a double standard is in place because Vic Mignogna, the former voice performer for Broly, was let go from the company over allegations of sexual misconduct from Monica Rial (Bulma) and others. (Many find the claims themselves dubious and unsubstantial. Sexual misconduct claims are typically very difficult to prove even when said allegation is reported to law enforcement on-time with substantial evidence and collaboration).

Do you believe that Funimation should lose the Dragonball License? Are you going to boycott Funimation licensed games from now on or buy them from an alternate source? What is your opinion of the situation?

WAKU WAKU FOREVER. but uh... I mean if the dub hits the ♥♥♥♥, I honestly can't complain, a line of dominos started falling a while ago, if this is at the end, then.. so be it, dubbed DB won't be a thing.

I doubt Dragonball content would stop being a thing in the West though, it'd just be like Yakuza where the game was only VA'd in Japanese really, they'd cut Funi out of the deal with the games.

Internet jerks go full-bore Zamasu in their deluded self-righteous crusade against "SJWs" and psychologically project with all their might without noticing a hint of irony or hypocrisy, flame wars of no meaning or relevance erupt all over the place, while the studio does whatever they think is the quickest, easiest, and most profitable solution, and nothing particularly meaningful gets accomplished.

That's the reason it's controversial, due to the hypocrisy displayed. More or less people are using it as an excuse to apply further pressure in Vic's favour, as all allegations and evidence have been disproved, and this is just another nail atop the KickVic coffin. Honestly if it wasn't for the whole thing about defaming Vic then.. It'd probably have been "funny haha" and been gone already.

Thing is, this wasn't in their private lives, it was outtakes during recording sessions. It's behavior that would cause folks to be let go from other companies, so yes, they should absolutely be fired for the bigotry and un-professionalism they displayed.

That said, admittedly it's not as bad as the sexual harassment Vic Mignogna did, which most folks agree was terrible and was easily enough of a reason for him to be fired. (Not to mention, he's trying (and failing) to use the courts to intimidate/silence his accusers, which just adds to the scumminess. Unsurprising.)

Of course, no one really believes Funimation did that because it was the right thing to do. They did it because it was good publicity, which, this time, happened to also be the right thing to do (kicking a serial harasser to the curb).


I guess whether these VAs get kicked will depend on how much Funimation believes incest 'jokes' and bigoted 'jokes' will affect business.

uhhh so what? robin williams did the same thing in with doing the voice of genie in aladdin. voice actors have fun time to time. jokes are jokes. also if they were to fire the 2 MAIN CHARACTER VOICES funimation may as well just close the doors on dragonball. speaking of which has anyone even SEEN the unedited version of dragonball or even Z? if not then you would see why this wouldnt phase most people of the series.

Outtakes are usually off kilter and out of place sometimes crude and usually funny.

I think the problem is how seriously people take a little banter these days.

The reason this is a thing is because Funi supposedly fired Vic Mignona for similar reasons, so this was unearthed to show a double standard. I personally think the clips are funny, and I wouldn't care about them existing at all. But the specific context at hand here does look interesting.

I don't want anyone fired. I just want the stupid culture war to stop. I don't think it's a coincidence that Funimation is making dumb descisions like this (And the infamous gamergate line in Prison School) ever since Gen ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stopped being in charge. But who knows?

I believe it's possible to make raunchy jokes without actually thinking or believing the things you're saying, using a slur in a joking manner shouldn't automatically turn you into a racist or homophobe. Generally you shouldn't do it, but it's not something that should be a career ender.

Ultimately I don't care, nor do I think the cast members should be fired for making these jokes. They seem like good enough people, and I doubt any of them actually harbor any ill will against any group of people. But who knows honestly.
