Steam version patch 1.005
but the latest Patch is 1.006

anyone know why steam runs 1.005

That rings a bell with me also. There were old threads on this same issue, I think it might have ended up that multilayer is unavailable on steam, which sucks, but as everyone says, multi player in stalker sucks anyway. Not very helpful I know - sorry.

Most of the up-to-date mods are for 1.005.
