You've answered your own question, don't jump into huge, complicated mods before not knowing how to play the base game.
Radiophobia 3 is a mod I am still exploring. A lot of your quests and things to find are not marked, and given to you in vague notes to lead you to where you're going. Finding these notes can be even trickier. Basic Tip: Read your PDA. Probably 0 guides online, only showcases of the mod. The fun is exploring all of this yourself. If you love the atmosphere, why not take the time to actually enjoy it?
the absolute lack of guides online put me off. But i liked the idea of having more realism and more quests
