How does Hunger work?

I played the game for a few hours now but so far, I could not figure out how hunger works. I do not see any kind of hunger meter on my hud. I always eat one bread whenever that green hunger icon appears. But it comes back after 10 minutes or so. How do I check how hungry i am? Also, no mods, I play on vanilla.

I dunno. I just eat any food I find. Never noticed an impact from hunger, though admittedly I never really remained hungry for too long.

Just like bleeding hunger has 3 levels: green, yellow and red. If you see green you eat a less filling meal like a bread, if it's yellow you eat a sausage and if it's red and you are starving you eat a canned food.
It's very dumbed down however, you can finish the game eating only once and never again.

When you're at very low food (into the red icon) you gradually lose health. If you equip enough health regenerating artefacts like Meat Chunk you can counteract the health loss from starvation so you never need to eat ever again.
