Control Issues

There is something strange about the controls on this game. At least my copy. Mouse look works as you would expect. But nothing else does at all. At least at first. More investigation finds that the default control scheme is empty. No buttons are assigned to anything. And, while you can manually assign buttons, the mechanism for doing so does not react to their assignment. I can assign move forward to the "w" button, and that will work in the game. But the option screen does not show the assignment. And there are a lot of buttons to assign so it is getting very confusing for me to get them all to work.

Is this a known issue? Has anyone else encontered this? Is there a patch or a fix or something? I know S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is an old game but this is not normal.

Not really. This is one of the best, if not the best, first person, M & KB game I've ever played. Then, there's Farcry 2. :)

Never had any keybind issues, either. Don't know of any mod to fix it.

Interesting error... does it happen with other keyboards? Also, as one can never make assumptions these days, what language is your keyboard set to?

Finally, you might want to check the config file itself, it's called user.ltx and is in the appdata directory. Mine has lines in it such as:
bind forward kW
bind back kS
bind lstrafe kA
bind rstrafe kD

so perhaps this would be an alternative way of rebinding keys.


I'm sort of grasping at straws here but I hope you get to the bottom of it.

I have not tried other Keyboards. Though I'm not sure how a KB would be able to effect the in game options menu. Sadly, I do not have an extra to try in the immediate future. (The old one had all the letters scratched off and had to go.) But as soon as I can I will give that a try.

The config file thing sounds promising. I will look into that. I'm not as savvy with that sort of thing as I used to be. So the directions are appreciated. Will let you know results. Though it will likely be tomorrow before I can spend any time with this.

@sjg UIder.ltk file looks as you describe. If I am reading it correctly, everything is bound as it should be. It's just not being used in the game. 8(

Selva, you never mentioned if you verified? also did you hit the default in options?

@Tenkillsmore: Verified? Uh... Ok. I go to options -> controls. Scroll to litteraly any key binding option. All say "..." Maybe those are short undescores or dashes. Not sure. Click or select. It flashes red. Hit any key or button. It stops flashing. Normally here it would show the selected key or button. But it's still "..." There is a button marked "use" at the bottom. It doesn't seem to change anything. The bindings do seem to work if I go directly to the game. (Hitting the use button or simply backing out. I have tried both ways.) But there is no way to tell if I got them right. And restarting seems to mean I have to reset the bindings next play through.

If the"use" button is not what you mean by "verified" then I'm not sure what you are refering to. Appologies if I'm missing something obvious with that.

Also, hitting the "default" button has no effect. Or the default sets to all "no binding." Which is what I assume "..." is supposed to mean.

This is like the 5th time I've tried to get this game. Before it was just stupid luck and coincidence that stopped me. Apparently whatever gods there are do not want me to play this. When I find out who it is they are going to get slapped silly.
