Maps size and in game Time
So as a TTDX player and recently changing the game to allow experimental maps sizes,

the first question is what is the limit of the experimental map size?
because one of the things i find i miss from this game are the mod maps that were ever more realistic areas of the world where you get to run transport like your LNER, UNION, or GWR.

for example there was once a map in ttdx that was a near repoduction of london, with all the small towns that made it up into the city it was and all you had to do was connect them up with trams and slither your railways out of it to outer towns of say reading or basingstoke and have the towns/ city expand arround your railways.

the ability of the experimental maps sizes, and the advantage of having a size system means you can gauge near perfect recreations of the real world.

how ever the time of the map becomes an issue..? if there is distance, speed, then the time within the game could be caculated to mins and hours? making the days of the game last longer.. as i always feel a train travelling over 10-20km and takeing 4 days a bit weird. i understand that this is more to make the game useable over the years and gain faster newer trains or other transports as you progress your company. but surely being able to change the time could allow for more modding capleability like Sleeper cars on long distances or rain and weather that could slow your trains down due to slippy rails?

i know these are a few questions, (sorry) i seem to have a habbit for it.

There's a point where TPF would be unplayable if it were too realistic. (lLke TTD is "realistic"?)

There are maps in the Workshop based on realistic height maps.
8 seconds per day is the maximum

For maps:

The Tiny map size is 16 square km
The Small map size is 64 square km
The Medium map size is 144 square km
The Large map size is 256 square km
The Huge map size is 400 square km
The Megalomanic map size is 576 square km

The maps can have a ratio of 1:1 up to 1:5

So a megalomanic map of 1:4 ratio would be 12km x 48km

Keep in mind that it is highly advised to lower the amount of towns and industries on larger maps. (f.e. about 20 towns ans 60 industries)

The only way to slow down the time ingame is provided by RWB FxUK with the Time Progression mods, see the link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=794240646
Slowing time down even more may enable for hours to be displayed. However, it really would only serve immersion experience of passenger serviced timetables on routes where little to no interruption between (passenger and freight) services exists. I wouldn't know if someone will be freeing up time to produce such mod...
It all depends how you want to play it really. There are many maps that represent massive areas (usually in massive map sizes). But they have to compromise on the small scale map detail. E.g. London and Manchester might only be a few miles appart and your station might be as long as London is wide. At the other end of the scale, there are maps that just represent a small area and could be considered more 'realistic' (if you ignore all the other ways computer games aren't 'realistic'). It's horses for courses.

Here's a few examples:

A map of the whole world...

A map of London.

England and Wales. Bumbling Brit has picked 130 towns for this map:

If you haven't seen already, he has gameplay videos of it here:

A very small area of the UK:

My own fictional large map, comprising just one valley and some coastline with 9 towns and 7 villages.
Size: 8K x 4K (2:1), 32km x 16km (19.9mi x 9.9mi)

i guess what i enjoy doing is building my version of real life, eg if you were able to build London to bristol as the GWR would you do it differently or simmilar to what brunel built? (btw i think i've subed nearly all your stuff JK keep it up)

i may need to start screen shotting some of my TTDX style of building to show off what i mean XD, but i guess when it comes to American maps it be great to have your 2-3 mile trains but on 48km that feels a little too small for me to make it feel practical and what stopping us go as far as say 500km by 500Km map? then long haul flights high speed trains etc are going to feel right.

maybe i've just become to used to ridiculous map sizes XD
