But.. You can do however you want but I am just giving an opinion on what I do.. I still have not played with mods yet either so...
I'll probably start my next big playthrough (which, I'd waited for the patch today to begin) in 1900. That way I still get lots of steam-era play (especially with 4x mod), but bypassing horse road vehicles and the earliest small locomotives.
Note that one isn't restricted to 1850 / 1900 / 1950. In the custom game options, one can choose a start only 10 years apart.
2000 if I want to make something realistic and just watch things go around (no costs mod)
Oh i haven't even thought about that. I try that next time, in my current new save i started in 1900
