Crafting Prices Are Absurd!
30 bars of Iron to craft a single pickaxe?

45 bars of steel to craft a single sandstorm mask?

What is this nonsense!?

Just out of curiosity, I tried to play the game with the default, legit settings, and quickly became introduced to how long it takes to get any sort of actually decent loot. Especially when I run the risk of losing everything I'm carrying.

So for these items to be so outrageously expensive to make, I think from now on, I'll be going into games with custom difficulty and moving that slider WAY down on the material cost.

Might also increase the crafting speed, too. Because some of these materials take a long time to produce.

It's just pre-planning.

I gather a bunch of iron. Dump it in a furnace.
Then move on to killing for hide.
Then bark to make Hide into leather (and Tar).
Then use the Iron for Pick.
Then repeat.

You need a ton a resources. Just alternate farming to keep your production lines running instead of running around for just enough to finish your current project.
If iron pick is expensive then you have a stroke when you start to build a large base with hardened bricks, iron/steel reinforcements, insulated/shaped wood.
Grinding base components to make thousands and thousands of those will brake your will if playing SP.

As @Hefutoxin said you need to plan ahead. Make multiple furnaces, Blacksmith benches, Carpenter Benches.
I usually run 3 furnaces for iron ingots and one for brick.
Two carpenter benches. One for shaped wood, one for insulated wood.
Two Blacksmith benches. One for for making reinforced iron (then steel reinforcement later on), the other for tools.
Even with vanilla settings you can make a heap of stuff without having to wait for one item to finish before you can make something else.

In no time at all you will have all the bits and pieces you need to build big time.

It takes a bit of time and resources to set up initially, but well worth it. It's called 'smart' play.

Just use Admin panel for everything , why harvest, why craft just spawn it in, seems up your ally
If you're playing single player, the timers are a ridiculously grindy, timesink. It's more geared towards clan/group play though it can be done solo. That's why the game has a whole bunch of server settings for you to tune most aspects relating to resource harvesting to make it less grindy.

Even with the crafting time turned down to minimum, it's still taking longer than I would like, when I craft in bulk.

As I said, plan ahead. Craft smart.

Can't plan a head, when I bought the game less than a week ago. I don't even know what I'm supposed to be doing as far as the story goes. I know it involves removing the bracelet and escaping beyond the barrier, but aside from that, I have no clue.

First of all my apologies. I didn't realize you were new to the game.

At the start of the game it can feel really slow and you can feel defenceless. Don't panic.
I'm assuming by your comments you are playing Single Player.
Press 'ESC' > Server Settings > click on 'Make me Admin'
Exit back to game. Press 'Esc' again and you will have full Admin control. You can adjust everything and anything you choose.

To much to cover here just now but feel free to ask any Q's.

To throw you off a friendly 'deep end' I can recommend a really friendly free NA PVE server. Just look for 'BLOODBANE EXILES'. Admins are in game most of the time and super friendly. I'm in there (player name 'The Hawke').

Everyone will help you on your journey.

Thanks!

I was in another friendly server a while ago (Lords of Destiny), but I had to quit, because their server rule said registering on their Discord was mandatory, and threatened to ban players if they refused to do it.

---------------

But first day of playing, I immediately went into Admin mode, just to mess around and get a feel for the game. After that, I tried to play normally and see how far I could get, but I usually end up switching to admin mode by the time I get to Steel crafting, because of how long it takes to reach that point.
As people have already said above, but which I would like to reiterate here, there's a major ramp-up in crafting speed reasonably quicklly. On a default 1x server, you can easily get 10,000 iron from a single clear of an iron-rich area once you've got a decent set of tools. The game feels very slow and dangerous at the beginning, because it's a survival game, and the desoeration and weakness are in the spirit of the game. Once you get above iron tools, though, you will be flying.

thralls and better crafting benches significantly cut down on crafting time. with a good bench and a teir 4 named npc thrall you looking at crafting speed being cut down by 450%(200 for the best bench and 250 from the named thrall)

Speaking of tools, how am I supposed to use these weapon and armor upgrades?

I made a couple of Tool Upgrades to try powering up my pickaxe and hatchet, but nothing I tried was able to apply it properly.

The start of the game is rough. Once you get better tools, you get more resources, more resources, better equipment, then after getting named thralls. Its just keeping up with all of the crafting.

yes the start of the game is rough, its conan where its not supposed to be easy. It does get better though.

Drag the upgrade over the item to be upgraded. The item must be fully repaired and cannot be currently equipped.
