Seriously, its a survival game. Youre supposed to be weak in the beginning.
I have 2000 hrs in ARK, i've solo'd Extinction on alpha difficulty etc. This is just MMO-style bs, if I wanted that I'd play Wow.
"Q" locks you on your target if you miss your hits, but it also locks you on your target and that can get annoying.
Funcom funcomed the combat in the last update, because they disabled the ability to change the direction of your attack in mid combo without the target lock. It used to be fine before the change, but it's Funcoms habit to "fix" and change things that are not broken in the first place..
I hope they revert back to old style.
Like I said on one of your other threads - try different weapons and experiment with light/heavy attacks so you can learn how the combos behave. Sometimes you are better off NOT going for a full combo depending on what you are fighting and what weapon you are using. Some weapons may suit your play style better than others. Also keep in mind that sprinting then attacking changes the attack distance/pattern. Keep an eye on your stamina, too. Sometimes you may want to roll away from the enemy when your stamina is almost drained rather than run out of stamina while swinging at them at close range. This is *NOT* a button masher - you have to think about what you're doing and manage your stamina in combat.
Not all enemies are created equal - you might be fighting something that's too strong for you and this CAN happen in this game. For example going up against most one skull or three skull enemies when you're using stone weapons is basically just asking to get killed as is going too far from the new player area (noob river) before you're ready. Some enemies hit harder than others even if they look similar. If you CANNOT defeat something right now then maybe it would be in your best interest to just leave it alone and come back later when you are stronger and/or have a thrall or a pet and/or have better gear and/or are better at the game.

Yeah, it's basically the learning curve kicking them in the butt - once they get used to the game they'll be fine.
You can outrun pretty much anything in the game so watch your health levels and don't take chances.
It only takes a day or so to get to level 20, after that you won't have any problem getting food.
The idea is to get gear to protect you, weapons that make you stronger, and spells to make it easier.
Create shelter, storage, and workstations and keep getting tougher. My main character goes weeks with out getting killed.
Keep an eye out (pun intended) for the little tells like that indicating a much stronger opponent. A skull anywhere on the health bar? Higher difficulty. Glowing eyes? Corrupted creature = higher difficulty (Corrupted Wolves are brutal if not prepared). Huge/Over-sized? Likely much stronger or otherwise too powerful to tackle when unprepared.
Anything with 3 skulls is considered a 'world boss', such as the huge gator or the spider you mentioned. They tend to have larger health pools, larger attack areas, hit harder, etc.
