Why do people play spy on Normal difficulty MVM?
Do they even THINK about it? You'll be near either a large group of robots that will probably kill you the instant you get a backstab, or a giant robot that will kill you seconds after you try to backstab it. Yes, you can sap, but it has to recharge and even then scout with mad milk or just an airblasting pyro could slow them down or even make the bomb go back to the start much better than spy could. It can be good for taking out ubermedics and engie robots, but not really much else, and those don't appear more than a couple times during normal difficulty. I'd like to hear your reasoning behind playing spy on normal difficulty.

Spy is one of my best classes (Third only to Engineer and Pyro). Also, the Sapper is somewhat useful against the (IMO totally unnecessary) Boss robots.

then why not play engie or pyro? i'm not trying to sound rude here, i just want to see some actual reasons why people play spy in mann vs machine over all of the other classes.

Spy is useful for taking down medics, giving them no chance whatsoever to über the boss target, helping your team out big time.
A good spy is also handy for safely gathering money.

Yes, that's usually the scout's job. But, for instance --- if I'm the scout, and the bomb carrier happens to be a scout in a pack of scouts who broke past the defensive line and everybody else chose to be slow sorts (and nobody bothered to get the "teleport to spawn" canteens), I'm probably going to take it upon myself to chase them down and kill them because money collection ceases to matter if you fail the round. Likewise, the scout may find himself stalling a giant bomb carrier at the hatch (FaN knockback... doesn't fling 'em far, but it /can/ buy time, for instance) or needing to add some DPS versus a tank -- because again, bomb drop = cash doesn't matter.

Also, even good scouts are likely to die occasionally, and while they respawn quickly it's not quite instant and they're not infinite-speed, so a second money collector can help prevent money from expiring before the scout can get back there (or even find it, since most people don't bother to call out where the money is and sometimes it falls into ravines or the like).

A spy can also make himself useful on those tank-backed-by-sniper waves...

too bad not many people do any of that as spy, they just seem to go out and get one stab and they're dead. I'd like to play with a good spy.

Because if there is money around the spawn of Robots and it's too risky to get it (Bigrock, for example), the Spy can use the Dead Ringer and get the cash. His main goal is usually taking out support robots, such as Medics, Snipers, etc. As long as the Spy focuses on upgrading his Sapper and Knife (Recommend Stock Knife), then he is okay, but having him around requires perfect credit score, since he needs a lot of credits for the upgrades.
Don't see why people look down at Sniper and Spy for MvM.
Mucinex 28 dec, 2012 @ 19:01
He's also good for taking care of robot Engies and Snipers. Aswell as slowing down sentry busters and giants with his sappers.
well the spy can aid to slow down the bots and collect money if their is no scout also use a dead ringer so you wont die easy as a spy

I mainly meant when people already have a scout. I see a team of: one scout, one soldier/demo, one pyro/heavy, one engineer (me), one sniper and one spy happening a lot, and i want to know why people go sniper and spy when they already have scouts on easier difficulties where there are barely any medics

It's for the same reason that there's always 3-4 spies and snipers in pvp. Unfortunately I don't know why they do it there too. Maybe because they think the class is cool?

That said all classes can work great on expert if you have the skill, the right team setup, and decent or better players. The ideal setup is scout, engy, demo, 3 heavies. There's also some rules about playing spy and sniper. If you are a spy you should be replacing either the demo or scout. Sniper should replace only a 3rd heavy, unless he's very good and you can go without a demo (not likely).

On mannworks as spy I've replaced just the scout and gotten all the money and usually rival the demo for kills. I've also replaced the demo and gotten all medics no problem as well as just as many kills as a demo. This makes tanks harder so you need a good team. I've even replaced both scout and demo here, getting all money and killing all medics as well as a good amount of enemies. This method you have 4 heavies, and I've pulled it off even with randoms. If you're replacing scout as spy here, go no upgrade scout on wave 2 because as spy you can't do anything but get the money this early in the mission. Pee sniper is best sniper here, and should only ever replace 3rd heavy. Upgrade jarate first for the wins, and use the sydney never upgrading its damage. Pro tip: explosive headshot works with the sydney.

Decoy you must almost always have a demo to take care of the snipers, as this is the demo's job. I have replaced demo on decoy as sniper, but it's not the best choice imo. What's better is what I did with a friend of mine who is the only other great mvm spy I've seen, and he was spy here on decoy with no scout, and I was sniper with no demo. With him there he worked on the enemies/medics while I took care of the enemy snipers (and then go back to the enemies). The 2 of us handled the enemies when the tanks came so the 3 heavies and engy could concentrate solely on it. I've also done spy, no scout, but with a demo here. A very good choice if you have a non-pro demo who can't seem to get all the medics. Having sniper replace a 3rd heavy here is the best I've found. Extreme damage to giants and you can help the demo out with the medics and snipers if he needs it.

Coal town is tricky for spy due to its size and the numerous tanks that you need dps for. Replacing scout as spy here is not recommended if you want all A+, unless you have a very good team that doesn't lose the frontlines. Replacing demo is possible, but not nearly as efficient as a pro demo who kills 90% of all the enemies up front. As spy you can get about 50% or so at best. Sniper is a better choice here to replace demo because with explosive headshot you can wipeout groups of enemies and deal massive damage to giants right off the bat. Not a good idea to replace 3rd heavy here because of the missing dps for all the tanks. It's possible if you handle the frontlines allowing the demo to follow the tanks.

Best loadout for spy: kunai/big earner, letranger, dead ringer. I've found the kunai to be slightly better.

Best loadout for sniper: heatmaker, jarate, bushwacka.

Lmao when he ubered. Also, you don't sap the sentry buster, pees the engy off. He did a few cool stabs, but I'd say he was decent at best.

spy is good for anti-spy, Anti-engy, anti-medic, anti-sniper, distractions ect
