Team Fortress 2
Heavy's Rage = Useless?
This is the first time I actually am questionning Heavy's Rage mechanic.

I have been kicked twice in a row for going and spending cash in Rage.
The rage pushes bots back, especially giants, and I find it very useful against giant Pyros, Sollies and Scouts, when paired with a nice Medic Shield.

I've been told this upgrade doesn't help the team
I've been told "F-word Heavy and your rage"
and apparently everyone agreed and then called me toxic for it.

I'm kinda pee'd off, but I need to know, is Heavy's Rage "toxic" and "useless to other players"? I never have faced this situation where 5 other players shat on me for buying this upgrade.

Other upgrades I had : Health On Kill, Ammo, RoF, Piercing, Projectile Destruction. I only picked Rage later.

If anyone could tell me what's wrong with buying the Rage boosts, I'd be very grateful.

1.- Rage halves your damage.
2.- Rage throws off everyone's aim of the robot crowd. This goes for Soldiers, Demos, Snipers and Spies. A missed shot does no damage.
3.- Spamming rage defeats the Heavy's strongest weapon: Ramp up. The closer you are to a bot, the more damage you do. Not only do you halve your damage with rage, you push robots away, making more distance, and diminish your damage even more. This goes for all the classes that also wished to damage the bots as well, who either miss or get diminishing returns.

Do not spam rage. One point is more than enough to get the full benefits of it. Use it when:
-A bot is about to cap
-Full bomb reset
-Partial bomb reset, under the premise that you kill the bots soon after.

It halves your dmg and make bots walk backwards when it should walk forwards.

When rage is useful.
-If bomb is about to deploy
-Making bosses take fall dmg
-Having fun and/or screwing others.

If you push giant pyro and scouts back I can sort of see. Pushing soldiers???? That's downright stupid.
When using rage, your bullet damage is halved. Additionally, knockback usually causes more harm than good for many reasons. Almost every weapon in the game suffers from damage falloff and benefits from damage ramp therefore knocking bots away causes your team's damage output to drop even more. Unexpected knockback also makes it more difficult for classes dependent on close range (scout, soldier, pyro, heavy, spy) and precision classes like sniper to do their jobs. A somewhat more niche problem is that if the bomb carrier is pushed off the bomb path then it may no longer take the designated path resulting in undesired unpredictability of the bots. You should consider investing that $350 elsewhere.

pushing giant medics is the most common mistake since it will likely just re-attach or heal other stuff that shouldn't be healed

Agree with others, just want add when you play a heavy usually enough just bodyblock glants, probably only pyro can kill you if come too close.

Okay then, thanks for your help.

Judging of that fact you have bought 5 of 6 minigun upgrades, the RoF was firing speed. Maybe it's good for newbies on expert, but more experienced heavies usually buy a couple of resistances from the most dangerous attacks.
Anyway rage upgrade is not so uselul upgrade. It's pretty expensive, needs too much damage for recharging (4000, as I remember) and also your damage during rage is only 50%. Knockback is also not so strong if you have not vertical momentum source(like scout's FaN or pyro's airblast), you can push back giant back to 10-12 meters maximum, or 20-24 if you will take refund and disable "+-50% effect duration" stat". Well, it could be uselul against bosses, but all bosses have "rage giving scale" attribute (usually it 0.1, 0.15 for Solider boss with Liberty launcher), so you need either charge your rage on standart bots or deal 40000 damage to boss for using that ability. So... it limited uselul, good only against giant Scouts or Pyros, like you suggested before.

Giant Pyros I could understand, but Super Scouts have some mediocre damage up close that its more worth it to just bodyblock them or rage them at the bomb drop only.

Nice to meet a new guy who listens to advice instead of blaming everything and everyone else but himself.

Good on you.

projectile deflection is a much better upgrade, it does nothing to your damage and with the 2nd tick makes you a true iron kurtan *commie jokes*

Why would you buy piercing?

The heavy's bullets can only attack one bot at a time. With every upgrade, the Heavy is capable of softening crowds even faster because you start to deal damage to the previous bot instead of having to kill the first target to get to the next. It's very powerful and makes crowds get easier to deal with.
One point is usually enough, since it's hard for four bots to line up perfectly.

you dont need penetration on heavy if you track good enough

stuff that would need penetration like steel gaunlets will be killed by sniper or whatever
