The theory the OP is proposing is based on actually analyzing what the Pyro is: an axe-crazed maniac who is clearly hallucinating from being baked alive inside a bulky fire-proof suit.
Not silly things like a cartoon character's glove shape (not even his hand!), or that there's a purse in a locker room and it just happens to be near an unused gas mask.

...in all seriousness, Valve's always teased and toyed with the mystery of the Pyro's gender and identity, whenever it seems like they give one strong hint on one end, they almost immediately counter it with a hint towards the other end. I think Valve just wants the fans to view Pyro as whatever they see it fit as.
