TF2 Old School mod installation?

I used to play TF2 on windows 8 on this laptop and it worked just fine on low settings with now lock ups. This same computer about a year later is now running linux with Zorin or whatever, and the game freezes and locks up about every 20 seconds of gamepla, despite running about the same speed as it did before. I installed Chris' FPS config and it did help a lot, but it still locks up during gameplay about every minute or so. I'm thinking making the game even faster should help even more, so I tried to install THe Old School pack. Unfortuantely, I have no idea whatsoever how to do that. I remember reading to put it in the tf/custom which only has a readme saying it would scan this folder. When I put the pack in (3 folders) The game wouldn't even launch. Anyone succesfully installed it? I managed to install the confg correctly first try so I'm sure I can take basic directions.

tf/custom/old school/the three folders.

make a folder named old school in your custom folder and drag the materials/models/whatever into it.

I don't see any option to link a file here, but yeah that is my file path, I've double-checked. It hasn't applied t it though, the game is still as it was before.

was going to turn it into a vpk myself but the creators already did it for me.

this is the problem with mods from over a year ago.
