In the old days, you could only exchange a maximum of 8 items in one trade. Because of this, anything people valued as high-tier, such as Unusuals, couldn't simply be paid for with Keys. So, people took the 3 major no-longer distributed items of the day, Bills' Hats, Earbuds, and Maxs' Heads, and used them in place of a set amount of Keys. Big Kills and Lugermorphs also had a great deal of value, but they are more often used as expensive weapons and not as currency. Nowadays, you can pay for any Unusual in Keys since you can trade a massive amount of items at once, but in TF2's past these items had to be high-tier for a reason.

I get that there rare and everything but like still XD
