Crash on joing any map
I keep crashing when I join a map. The map does not load. The 64 bit update beta worked last time I used it.

My findings (Windows 8.1 user):
Removed TF2. Cleared the common/Team Fortress 2 folder and backed up my cfg, screenshots, maps, etc.
Reinstalled TF2 fresh vanilla.
Rebooted.
Tried TF2 thru Steam, using tf_win64.exe -> crashes upon map load or settings button.

Tried TF2 thru Steam, using tf_win64.exe launch options "-dxlevel" 90 or 95 or 98 -> still crashes like above.

Tried TF2 (32bit) tf.exe shortcut using "-steam" parameter to make sure I am not 'unsecured' as I read in many other threads -> WORKS!

So for now, us Win7/8.1 users will have to rely on Valve hotfixing the 64bit executable or someone finding a miracle fix.

@fran how did you get it running in 32 bit?

Go to your \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2
Find tf.exe
Right click, copy, then "Paste Shortcut" on your desktop/where you want to keep it (I recommend this rather than deleting the x64 exe which is tf_win64.exe)
Right click said shortcut, add '-steam' (without the quotes, and AFTER the "s in TARGET field.
i.e. I have my Steam folder on my D: drive so the Target field is
"D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf.exe" -steam

This is a better way (don't launch through Steam!) than deleting the the x64 exe and renaming the tf.exe in its place like most suggestions in the last 24 hours.

Servers down?

I found a working way to get it to work. Some people on github were very helpful. Use this command to start Tf2.

["A:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf.exe" %command% -steam]

"A:" is the drive on where you would have the game installed.
I can't remember what the command for having the game installed on your default directory would be, such as your "C:" drive"

Ask me for any info if you need help.

I dont think this is an OS issue. A friend of mine (who is on win7 64bit) can join casual servers and open the settings menu, in TF2-64bit version, no problem.
Didnt have to fix anything or use any workarounds, the game was just updated and ready to play instantly. So it would seem the issue is unrelated to win7.
Hope this info could be useful somehow.

I'm in the same boat as you guys. Game crashes-to-desktop when joining ANY servers and clicking the settings button also crashes-to-desktop.
I wish we would at least get an error message when the game closes..

i think renaming one exe (well,or 2 if you don't want to move / delete the 64 one) is way faster / easier compared to the other method but, hey,as long as they all work...who cares

very interesting post, vibrato . i am not doubting you but so far everyone on win 7-8 had the same problem so i don't know what to say ; my 7 is of course 64 bit so i don't really see how your friend wouldn't encounter the same issue

btw, some people were saying the reason for the crashes is lack of emoji support on win 7-8 but who knows

any luck / info from the github threads ?

guess i'm gonna answer my own question . interesting discovery if true (i still haven't tested it)

!t worked! with -nosound, im able to open the settings menu in 64bit! ! was also able to join a standard casual match.
Very interesting discovery, indeed. That -nosound is a huge catch, however. Hoping for a fix soon. Thanks for sharing!
Dam, guys, im with the same boat with y'all.
If you found reason why we cant open settings or join casual, can you tell? Please?

I confirm the -nosound option works. So the problem really is the sounds

I had the same problem as you, when I opened the game on Steam, I couldn't access the settings or start a casual game, but this was resolved when I checked the integrity of the files in the game properties and started the game from the file tf.exe executable but now I have another problem, when I start a casual game a warning appears saying "Server unprotected, restart your game"
jeff__100 Apr 21, 2024 @ 11:22am
@The_ZombieBR is that what is said word for word? "Server unprotected, restart your game"

So, after going through his console logs it always stopped at "voice_init".
Countless research later about completely unrelated issues I found out that if you set

"voice_enable 0", so basically disabling voice chat,

your game should work again (opening settings and joining matches).

For him it did at least, maybe it does for y'all too.
Lemme know if it don't
