It’s generally safer and faster than stickey jumping but it’s more situational since you can only do it off of slopes and it needs to recharge, as well as not being able to jump again while in the air if you time it right.
You can do this without having to use keys A and D. Personally, I use A and D to correct my movement during the charge and after when I sore in air, strafing. When you charge to your right, press and hold the D key, and once you transition to the left, press A.
Trimping is like strafing, but using a shield and looking for slopes. If you're still confused about the strafing, checkout Natefox's video about rocket jumping. He explains strafing pretty well and the same can be done with the shield.
