I would love to see the command unrestricted so players can get full texture quality and resolution. Believe it or not this game can actually look really, really good with its timeless art style.

However some theory’s have come to my mind about why the command is currently restricted. With the addition of so many new maps, cosmetics and visual effects, I wonder if these new additions are not able to hold up to the quality of mat_picmip -3. This would cause a huge clash of high res and low res textures throughout the game.

it’s been 8 years since that change and I wonder if it’s even possible for any kind of visual overhaul now. So many textures need to be updated, entire MAPS. Community made and possibly valve’s own work.

thoughts? ideas?

Most maps reuse the same textures that have been in the game since 2007. Mostly this is a good thing for consistency reasons with the older maps. So if they don't "hold up", the original six maps won't "hold up" either.

pretty sure the material system is a pile of spaghetti after skins broke the game and valve had to hackjob fix stuff since potatos were dying of ram starvation and performance went to hell
i wouldn't expect it
would be nice tho
