Also, it might be possible to circumvent the holster speed reduction by switching to another weapon immediately after switching away from the Axtinguisher, but don't take my word for it.
The big one is that the damage is based on the remaining afterburn DURATION on your target, not the damage. The damage of your axtinguisher on full afterburn duration will do 163 damage.
So if you hit someone with a flare, which has a duration of 7.5 seconds, your axtinguisher will do about 140 damage.
If you just hit someone with a couple flame particles, you will do about 100-110 damage.
However, you can "place" flame particles inside an opponents hitbox for a longer period of time by aiming downwards, which reduces their velocity. Due to the way flames work, this can allow you to hit someone with the same particle like 6-7 times, which puts their afterburn duration pretty close to that of flare afterburn duration. Using this you can hit someone with a 50dmg flame puff and then follow up for 130 damage axtinguisher hit in about .6 seconds.
Also the axtinguisher is most useful in tight spaces, where you can use airblast to trap opponents into corners, where they not only can't move, but also take extra flame particles, increasing your melee damage.
If you don't have a wall near by, the only way you generally get axtinguisher kills is using a mobility tool like the detonator or jetpack to close the distance, otherwise most opponents will just be able to run away from you.
