How can people in their early 20s afford VR?
got about 200 hours as a desktop user and got insulted many times for not having a VR headset, just today i got insulted by a 12/13 kid for not having VR, spoiled brat wtf.

After rent and food there is not much left and i work full time in an EU country.

Any tips?

I make about 13.75/hr and get paid weekly, making about 25-35 hours a week. After bills and essentials I save about $100 or $50 per week. Sadly though after saving enough to buy a HTC VIVE my gaming laptop couldn't run it....
Would upgrade PC to a desktop but I have limit space in my room :/

You can try lowering supersampling. It'll get more pixelated, but maybe you will be able to run it.
That is, if you already own a vive.

What I did is "less expensive" but not necessarily cheap:

Use a motorola G4 cell phone inside any VR binocular headset and link to vr chat using Trinus VR software with steam VR. That will give a low resolution headset 3D experience for about $140. Movement would come via mouse and keyboard or gamepad in the simplest form.

I have seen old developer versions of Oculus headsets on ebay for mabe $200.

I recently put together a motion controller set using 2 old playstation move controlers 2 old playstation eye cameras and the psmoveservice software which works fine for vr chat but I would never try it in a first person shooter. The entire setup still cost around $100 but maybe less if you could find good used prices.

To put together the entire setup of headset and contollers it maybe best just to wait for oculus prices to drop again at the hollidays to $4-500 or buy on ebay, assuming you have powerful enough desktop to run oculus.

There are several youtube videos explaining hw to set up the above systems.

My recomendation though would be trying the Windows mixed reality headsets, many brands to choose from and not as heavy on the pocket book. (picked my Lenovo Explorer up for $300)

All in all I'd recommend the Lenovo Explorer as a cheaper solution, provided you can do your own tech/driver support with google. However if tech/driver support isnt your thing the Oculus Rift is dropping to a similar price range, and is far less hassle or so I've heard.

Side notes on the Lenovo Explorer if your interested:
The controller tracking is a touch lacking on them, lose and re-gain tracking pretty easy, has to due with inside out tracking method used by all "WMR" headsets instead of the outside in method Vive and Oculus use.
Drivers can be a pain because Windows is a picky mistress.
Cables are a bit short for my taste (4m/13ft), but extenders can generally be used to push to about 7m/23ft.
The comfort is nice even with glasses, very light headset.
The resolution is very nice with 1440x1440 per eye vs. the Vives 1080x1200 per eye.
Outside in tracking has less cables (its all inside the headset), No light houses or cameras like the Vive/Oculus use.

Long winded my rant has been, but I hope it helps in some way.

Cant´believe I found this incredible Piece of Tech only today!
Thanks friend, this shall make a good Christmas or Birthday Present to myself!

Easy... Actually. Have had my Vive since last year. I am 24. I hold a steady full-time supervising job, go to college still for master's, and juggle my gaming quite nicely.
I also have no social life.
There are some things you give up.
(I haven't actually played 120 hours worth of games in the last two weeks. Pluto is a liar.)

for the most people it's really simple i think. working and saving up money.
i work fulltime in the eu and after everything i need for living like rent, food and stuff, the rest gets saved up. i dont smoke, i dont drink, i dont go out of the house much. i rarely get myself anything for the whole year except a new game everynow and then. mostly 1 time per year or even every 2 years i get myself something more expensive, the rest is, as i said, saving money and working.

i personally dont know anyone in vrchat which just had it because of rich parents or something. even the younger ones that i have met are saving up money since months only to get themself a vr headset.
I dont know your financial situation, but there are many good reasons why a lot people cant afford to buy a vr headset. life often isnt easy and doesnt go as you planned it. that's totaly ok, maybe you need longer to gather the money. but you shouldnt take the comment of some 12year old kiddo serious :P
all the "rich parents" and similiar comments sound most likely really jealous for me because they cant afford it themself. There are 3 kind of people that cant afford it. The ones who cant afford it and just accept it. The ones that cant afford it yet but are dedicated enough to save money until they can. And the ones that are jealous that they dont have/can have one and try to feel better, telling themself that everyone only has one because they where born with the golden spoon in their mouth^^

Keep your head up, save money and if you are really sure you will use it a lot. Then it's not wasted money. I personaly would have stopped playing vrchat since a long time, if i wouldnt bought a vr headset for it

Good luck!

Same reason we can afford cars and petrol, we work during the summer or weekends and blow it all on recreation.
Casia Loopy Nov 12, 2018 @ 7:16am
If you can't make more money, spend less on other forms of recreation, and eventually you'll get there.

My computer was already barely capable of VR so i saved up(wasn't buying many games anyways,) got a rift when the price dropped, and since then i've upgraded my computer to the point where I'm set until games have 1080s as their minimum spec.

If you can afford to save money you can buy VR. Keep it in a seperate account.

Work hard, don't spend stupid stuff, save. Not hard really.

Was able to get mine when I turned 19 a year ago, even just got myself a G290 Wheel and Shifter recently with the same steps recently even the no need of help with parents or support.

but seriously who have space and wanna seem like a complete socially awkward elitist ♥♥♥♥? i could buy it but i don't cuz people with vr tend to be elitist ♥♥♥♥♥ who thinks they're better than everyone else even tho that most of the americans with a vr headset i find most likely used their mum's credit card
Demoniaque_TTV Nov 12, 2018 @ 5:29pm
Just block them all as vrchat tell you to do with annoying people. I'm 18 and you're right that its hard to afford vr. I got mine by saving money and with the job I had.

To be fair, WMR headsets are pretty affordable. It really depends on where you put your money. Say if you think you will be using VR daily or every other day, yeah you probably can save up for a headset. I have friends working at McDonalds who managed to save up for a PC+Headset. To be honest with you though, now is not the best time to get a VR headset because it is in its early stage, whch means very much like other tech that are early, they can progress very fast. I would at least wait until after CES 2019 (in January) to see my options for a headset (there seems to be a lot of Chinese companies that are well-backed and are making headsets that are affordable and perform well). Personally, I am using a Vive, but that is subject to change once some other company starts offering full-body tracking.

I had a summer job this year and bought a gaming laptop (Acer Helios 300) then bought the Oculus rift out of it and Im only 19 years of age
only way for most 20 year olds to get vr is save up and still buy cheap by getting one in a ebay bid that went undetected and stayed cheap
