Which divinity game to buy
I finished OS2, loved the world of Divinity and am now waiting for the next sales to buy original sin 1. My main interest is story so I can tolerate a game with bad gameplay if the story's good. Im not sure which Divinity game I should get alongside Original sin 1. I want to learn as much as I can about the lore and characters of Divinity. My main pick is Divinity II or Dragon Commander. I know Dragon commander is an RTS and not a perfect one but I heard it's a prequel and is set way before other divinity games and that caught my attention.
Sorry for the long explanation.

There are othe divinity games besides DOS1 and DOS2???? Whoa!

Gonna have to take a look at those to see if they're on steam...

I’ve not yet played Divinity II, but Dragon Commander was alright. Good gameplay in theory, but it’s way too fast paced for my taste for RTS. I like to watch the action rather than be working on APM so it didn’t really suit me.

So what should I expect from the story? How much of the history does it cover? I like to learn more about the history of lizard/dragons race and also I wanna see more of lord of chaos which was absent in original sin 2.

It’s… a weird one. Very steampunk. Only played it once awhile back so I’m fuzzy on details.

Yeah saw some gameplay before I loved the steampunk style of it reminded me of guns of icarus. Just wasn't sure if it was worth it. Anyways thanks for answering, I'd like to play it later.

Divinity II and Dragon Commander are both fantastic (albeit very janky) games. I'd say out of the two, it's probably worth playing Divinity II first, as it is much more important to the overall Divinity timeline, being chronologically the latest game in the Divinity timeline. It is also much longer than Dragon Commander, and many of the concepts from the game cameo in Dragon Commander, so it's nice to have that knowledge before going into DC. I'd definitely pick them both up eventually, though.

Appreciate your help Razorblade, sure I consider buying both eventually.

I played Divinity II Ego Draconis back on the 360, it was neat. Janky, but interesting. Powerscale got kinda busted toward the end, felt like an actual god before the game was over. If you get the Dragon Knight Saga one it'll come with the Flames of Vengeance expansion which gives that game an actual ending.

The only other Divinity games I know are Divine Divinity, the first game, and Beyond Divinity, the kinda sequel. Divine Divinity will basically be your character becoming the Divine. The canon character for this is, of course, Lucian himself. Beyond Divinity follows a Paladin who has his soul bonded to a Death Knight and seeks a way to break the curse.

Huh, same as original sin 2. Would be cool to see Lucian in it though.

I like that! I don't have a problem with games becoming easier near the end.

No no, you misunderstood my first point, though perhaps I could have been more clear. You play a custom character, but for the sake of the timeline you play AS Lucian. When they made the sequel they decided they needed a canon character to be the hero of the first game and called him Lucian. It's Lucian's rise to become the Divine to defeat the Demon threatening the world, except you get to be your own person.

Slight disclaimer in that I did use magic so I can't vouch for melee exactly. I nuked everything with ease, but given how tanky I remember being in light armor I can't imagine it being much less godlike in heavy with a big sword. I didn't feel challenged again until the final boss. Also I never got access to Flames of Vengeance, so I don't know how easy or hard the expansion is.

As for the same story as DOS2, imagine how I felt having played D2 first. "Hey, I've seen this one before!" To say nothing of the fact that I knew he was in the future and trying to figure out how that worked.

Oh I see. Makes more sense now. Thanks for the explanation.

I wouldn't recommend Dragon Commander for the main story. Ally/advisor/wife side stories were mostly enjoyable to me even if they're basically binary decisions on moral dilemmas and political issues. Pretty short game length as well if you want to explore the things you missed.

Divinity 2 is much longer and isn't helped by the plague of obscure/unhighlighted quest items. Nothing ruins a game's pacing quite like combing through a dungeon for a key you need to progress.
