Game taking up nearly 70GB of space?
The specifications say it should only be around 35GB (45GB though actually), but for some reason since the update today it's taking almost nearly twice the amount of space? Any reason for this?

They added a new Definitive edition.

What they didn't do is allow people to chose which of the two clients to install, you're apparently stuck with both.

Which in reality for me means instant uninstallation, esp. since I've finished the original on hardcore anyhow.

The way it was handled for DOS, and DOS EE was much cleaner. Different appids, different depots. You can choose which one to install. This just forces you to install both versions. I'm currently downloading it to see if I can delete the data from classic after installation. I'm hoping it works and just ends up breaking the launching of the classic option from the launcher, but I guess it will depend on file structure. Even still, best case you're stuck downloaidng everything and then deleting data after the fact. Worst case, you're just stuck with a huge install with lot of unused files. Very inefficient.

That.... is a huge pain in the ass. I wonder what the thought process was here? I mean, I know storage is cheap, but I load most of my more modern games to my 512GB SSD and not my HDD and ~30GB of wasted space is kind of a big deal.

What does it matter in 2018 in an industrialized 1st world country how much space a game takes up? If you are seriously at the end of your 1TB IDE hard drive just delete some games you haven't played in 3 months or more.

It's not just storage, but bandwidth considerations too. I guess they wanted to keep it on the same appid to keep the steam community/workshop/reviews and all the other stuff in tact.

It doesn't even effect in any way personally because I have unlimited bandwidth and a large swath of unused storage, but it bothers me to see such an inefficient implementation.

At a guess? Console compatability. MS / SONY don't care about their user's HD space, they require titles to be unified & run well on the hardware. Different software ID #s / different file structure =/= what consoles demand.

There are people who have capped bandwith and no ability to buy more. Shockingly, not uncommon even in an industrialized western nation like the united states.

I'm not one of those people, but I don't just look at them with complete inconsideration and go "LUL just get more bandwidth hehe stop downloading so much, just wait a month bro, you don't need video games to live" and similar arguments that completely miss that point, which I'm sure will get inevitably get posted in response to this.

At least unlike other companies they give the user the choice of which game to launch. So people can keep going with their current save or jump into the new Definitive Edition. And thus avoiding "ruined save games" because of the update.

Many people use SSDs now which are fast but have low capacity.
Gotta love people complaining about a free game.

Okay, yeah, like I thought. Here's a breakdown

\steamapps\common\Divinity Original Sin 2\bin\ - Contains launcher exe, this is where steamappid points to. Support.exe. Folder is 143 Mb. Not actually needed if you don't plan to launch game through Steam since game is DRM free.

\steamapps\common\Divinity Original Sin 2\Classic\ - Contains bins for Classic DOS 2 classic. 44 Mb. Not needed if you don't play classic. The support.exe tool launches eocapp.exe in this folder.

\steamapps\common\Divinity Original Sin 2\Data\ - Contains assets for DOS 2 classic 31.9 Gb. Meat and potatoes of classic. Not needed to run DE.

\steamapps\common\Divinity Original Sin 2\DefEd - Contains assets + bins for DOS 2 DE. 21.8 Gb. Needed to run DOS 2 DE. Support.exe launches eocapp.exe inside the /DefEf/bin/ folder.

So, hilariously, the DE is actually smaller by about 10Gb than classic. Keep in mind if you delete the Classic and Data folders, the classic option on the launcher will throw an error. Definitive edition won't be effected in any way by these files missing. The games are completely isolated and no asset reuse is happening.

Try installing Gears4=120GB
Pumpkinreaper Aug 30, 2018 @ 2:09pm
Kudos to Nazar for the find, though I'm a little choked because I bought the game the other day in preparation for DE and just today found out (from this post) that it's combined with the regular edition.
ElectricalVibes Aug 30, 2018 @ 2:12pm
I removed my previous install, and just reinstalled it. Got up to 35 GB standard. The data contains the "classic" DOS2 too.

Edit: Remember that Campaigns, extra data, downloads, mods, etc adds up to your installation.
