Use your knowledge and feeling to decide it. Either way can be justify.
I did that one on my first play through, and I have enjoyed killing him every time since then. I find it more satisfying to talk to his miffed spirit and absorb it. To each his own.
If you let him win the arena you'll see something interesting.
Nah, my first playthrough I got to the last boss at 19. Clearing all the main quests in Arx should get you to 21, and if not, the Paladins on the bridge will likely get you there.
But if you read forums while playing, and see what quests are available, and don't rush the ending, yeah, 20 is hard to miss.
You can never kill too many magisters after the ♥♥♥♥ they pulled deaths to good for them and no the they were just following order argument ain't going to cut it any more than it did for the people who ran death camps in real life.
I only killed the ones the game forced me to kill, e.g., like when meeting up with Gareth at Fort Joy for instance. I even reluctantly went to work for them in Driftwood. I have no clue why they were hostile.
Yeah, in my opinion, this is the one aspect of the game/story I thought was poorly done. Their overall actions and group mentality did not match most of the one-on-one conversations with any of them. Throughout the entire game, I never got a clear idea whether I should consider them an enemy or a "friend just trying to help."
