He's actually part of a quest TO kill. Or persuade. However you decide to do it. But he's not going to be one of the first things you should fight in Fort Joy. Do other quests, and come back to him.

If you pick up a Yarrow Flower, he will not attack you and actually gives you a ring with Restoration on it. Which is a great way to get some early healing if you don't have heals on anyone else. Someone else wants the ring, but you can postpone that part of the quest and just keep the ring for a while. He can be tough to fight early on, but you can do his quest immediately without any fighting at all if you want.

Yeah if you keep dying, then simply just come back to him another time. Its not like theres nothing else you could be doing.

I persuade, thne do a failed pickpocket (later) and get him and the magister both. I'd like to avoid killing him, to see if he shows up later...for some reason I'm under the impression he does or it's just the way the ring is flagged.

Ah Ok, well I'll end him as usual....it's merciful.

I snuck past the fire slugs in the cave which was the right thing to do right?

Depending on your team comp you can mess with his pathing. I killed him using 2 enchantresses and a puddle of electric water. The Ai will try to waggle around the pool which costs him a turn. By that time I broke his magic armor and he was prone to permastuns.

You'll find that same strategy of use later in the game: 1 big enemy -> focus on disables rather than damage.
