Edit: On Classic, no idea if XP is different in different game modes.
In both games i finish the game with level 8 and reached level 9 after the fight in the ship.
Plus, take care about triggering "murderer" event: Gil and the lizard servent, plus any alive magisters can trigger it. It will normally lead to chaining fights and can even force you to kill companions (they want to kill the murderer, even when they where a part of the murder).
Its actually not a problem as Im doing this to see if I can make it to act 2 honor mode with a single lone wolf character :D (the other plyable toons dying that is)
8 is much more achievable with solid quest completion and maybe a little bit of magister /silent watcher housecleaning at the castle. This is the ideal for me. Ideally you want to be level 8 going into the Alexandar fight, because it makes that fight easier, and it means you'll probably be level 9 by reapers coast, which is about right.
7 is a bit under-levelled, and you'll struggle for a while in act 2.
You can squeeze out Level 9 if you are very thorough, but Level 8 is the most common.
