Gold Purse exploit
I ran a search and I couldn't find any topic covering this issue, so I figured I might as well post it on the off-chance Larian isn't aware. If you sell a gold purse to Traders they will put all their gold in the bag. Whenever they refresh their stock the game will register the trader being out of gold and give them a new supply, increasing the amount of gold in the bag.

I used the fish-seller in driftwood to offload my loot for gold and was getting annoyed he didn't have any gold to trade me with but was instead holding a corse purse now worth almost 10k. I thought to fix this buy buying the bag from him and tossing the purse into a lake or something. When I did and opened it, I saw that he had put the gold I gave him into the purse before handing it to me, so I was looking at a gold pile worth around 20k.

TLDR : You can exploit gold farming by sellling gold purses to traders filled with more gold than they have and then simply buying the gold bag back again to clean out a trader from all it's gold. If you leave the bag on the trader for a while, whenever it refreshes it's stock it will put all it's new gold coins in the bag so you can buy it back in a big haul.

Considering you can just use trainers and other hacks to get infinite gold, this is seems to be a bug, so I thought it worth reporting.

Tested this and couldn't reproduce with any merchant in Driftwood. Guessing it got patched, you on the GoG version?

Yeah, I am. Is GoG running behind? My GoG version is 3.0.142.271

I'm not sure but I think it doesn't automatically patch. Been a while since I last bought a game there.

GOG patches automatically if you're using Galaxy and haven't disabled that function.

Thanks. I'll go check it out. So just so I know you tested this correctly, did you :

-Sell a gold purse filled with more gold than they have? ( Example : Selling a gold bag with 4000g when the trader is carrying 3300 It only seems to work if they don't have any gold left in their inventory )
-Buying the gold purse back.

In my game the result is that the gold I spent on buying the gold purse back was put in the purse before it was traded back to me.

Hmm, in the name of science, I shall test this.

Just got a whole bunch of gratitude for giving him a coin purse worth 2000 for the 200 he had left.
Trader now has 0 gold, and my purse.
Had to buy the purse back for 2000, there were no extras inside. Think I actually lost a bit of money in the transactions.

Here's a screenshotted 3-part guide of how I did the bug.

Also note that whenever they replenish their stock the new gold they have gets stacked unto the gold stack in the bag.

There is another exploit to get potentially infinite money and items after Act 1.
You can recruit mercenaries on your ship, respec all their points into pickpocketing, steal from every trader possible, and them just dismiss them. They will leave your party permanently, and you can recruit the next one, which is able to steal from every trader again, because it is a new character.
They cost some gold to recruit, but can steal way more than that from even one trader, let alone the 10+ traders in Riftwood.
You even can make out with the spider lady for an idol each time, resulting in possibly infinite ressurections for your main characters.

Are the mercenaries unlimted in number though?

I only tried this to see if it works, but I was able to recruit the same mercenary (same name, race, skills) twice and it worked. I didn't test if there is an overall cap to how many guys you can recruit though.
With these two guys alone I was able to get around 80 resurrection scrolls and 90k gold. That was at the start of act 2, and six levels later, I still haven't spend it all.
Even if there is a limit (D:OS EE had a limit of 4 or 5, I believe), you can steal more gold than you can reasonably spend in the game.

So no one else was able to replicate this? Starting to wonder if it's just my client for some reason.

can conirm that it worked for me and my frend, i believe high level bartering is required

It works, atleast before the big patch, the trick is to trade them a back back with gold it that matches all the gold they have or more..

Step 1: see how much gold trader has.
2 fill bag with as much gold as the trader plus say 100 or 1000 gold
they trade you their gold.

step 4. they have the bag with money now buy it back for gold. then the gold you give them in return they put in the bag before they trade you back, so you get your money plus the bag of gold.

This solved all stealing issues for me as i did this a few times and was able to buy infinite equipment, as evey time i am getting low i just clean out the traders, (hint they get new gold every few quests / every time you level up)

Yeah, I reported this a while back.

You take all their gold.
Give them any container with gold in it.
All their new gold goes into the container.

It doesn't have to be a coin purse or anything. Just a container with at least 1 gold piece inside.
