I found the notes from the old man to be creepy once they started addressing my character by name.
My only question about the old rancher letters is, how does he know Bea's name? But maybe that will be explained later on. For some reason I'd assumed the two of them didn't know each other. Or is it like in Stardew Valley, where he's a relative or something who left the ranch to her? If so, maybe I missed that.
I hope they incorporate it better, I'd never forgive myself for falling in love with this game and then having this blow it all away.
I wouldn't say that this would ruin the game for me. But it certainly is a bit of a damp blanket.
He sold the ranch to Beatrix, He probably knows her name from the time leading up to the transaction. (I'm assuming that the sale goes directly from one to the other instead of 7Zee acting as a realtor of sorts.)
I have no idea what any of this is.
I love the idea of the starmails but not the execution at this point.
I think these read as sad memories of what used to and what could have been as they were obviously together for some sort of time.
The same tone is found in one of Hobsons notes.. Where he sat in a beautiful place and let his heart fill with sadness as he thought of someone he presumeably lost.
Maybe i am just a hopeless romantic but i have had this happen to me.. And I moved away from that city at the first oppritunity.
I know what they're supposed to sound like. But it's a happy sunshiney game about ranching gelatinous slime blobs with melodrama suddenly thrown in the mix. it doesn't gel.
Edit:
This goes for the Hobson messages as well.
To elaborate further, I can relate to what these two characters are going through and I find it a little rude that people are so quick to say "change it!" without considering the other players. I do enjoy the overall very happy tone of the game, but the game got SO MUCH better for me when they added the messages and letters. I like to feel like I can relate to people, I like to walk through familiar experiences and reflect, I like to know that I'm not the only one who feels nostalgic and ponder on how things could have been different. It's refreshing and immersive to have a little taste of reality in the game. The conversation that Bea and Casey are having is very similar to how I talk to my closest friends. We think back on the past and explain how we were feeling or talk about what lead us to make certain decisions. It's not obsessive or stalkerish, it's not dumping your emotional problems on someone, it's just reflection.
It's very easy to ignore the letters. For the sake of the people who actually enjoy them, please don't take them out. I'm a little disappointed in how overwhelmingly judgemental some of you were...
If you read them they are just all about super unhealthy talk about the past. There is nothing forward moving about them at all. Why would I want someone filling up my mail with that all the time when I am trying to do something with myself?
And it is silly to think I wouldn't read them if they are there in the game. I am not going to just ignore them if they tell me more about the world.
