No, there is none. I usually work several months on a single wallpaper to make it more advanced like the stuff you usually find in the workshop, then I optimize it to the best I can and usually get a "thanks for your time but now now goan **** yourself" mentality. My creations are refused to be approved because of some kind of mortal fear that people might complain about them here in the forum because of performance issues. A certain quality comes with an increased load on performance....oh what a surprise this is.
Or in other words, save your time and talent, man. Don't be like me and waste nearly 4.000 hours of spare time for an app that has devs that give you zero appeal to go on. If you have the technical background in graphics and want to use that in WPE you gonna have a bad time reaching people when your work is not approved.
To sum it up I can say that I was highly motivated for a few years and wanted to bring people free high quality content, so they can have fun on their desktops but now I don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about this app anymore.
I'm really sorry for you. I can totally understand you when you say "if it's an image with a lot of effects, it's lagging". I can also understand the developpers of WE, but just a category "Big configuration is needed" can be simple to create I think.
Is it impossible to create a market like for Counter-Strike stuff ? You propose an animated wallpaper for 0,10$/0,50$/1$... After buying it, the buyer can rate it then if it's not a good wallpaper he will not win anything, and WE can take 5%/10% on each sale. Just an idea.
What pisses me off the most is that I subscribed to wallpapers that make my mouse pointer lag to the point where the desktop is unusable putting a load of 80-90% on my 2070 gpu and they got approved in no time. Looks like some serious double standards when it comes to approval, amirite?
Not on Steam I guess. Some creators I follow have linked their paypal accounts for donations. I guess using a third party platform is all you can do when you want to sell your content.
In the very beginning, we were experimenting with a system like this but we scrapped the idea quickly. We hate apps that contain more layers of hidden costs and microtransactions. We come from the days of free mods for video games and that's the type of spirit that we wanted to let live on here.
Not everything needs to be about maximizing profits, if you don't want to create wallpapers for free, then don't. It's a hobby, just do it for fun, maybe also just to learn about image editing, scripting and other features that are very similar to game development (because that's what Wallpaper Engine is, a simple game engine).
Alright, that's a choice. However, there could be more qualitative content by implementing such a system. But on the other hand not wanting to have any hidden costs and microtransactions is a completely understandable argument as well.
Thank you for the time taken to answer me.
Let's ignore the fact that the developers themselves are against this type of model and it's never going to be a thing and let's think about the idea of payed wallpapers.
1. It's not going to work now whatsoever, no one is going to buy payed wallpapers, even if they're dirt cheap, when you have free wallpapers besides them, many wallpapers have multiple versions from different creators that are easily available.
2. Price tag doesn't mean quality. There are many free high quality, as professional as it gets, products on the internet in general, which wouldn't be an exception in terms of WE.
3. Don't forget the competitors, there are plenty of free alternatives to WE, but most of them don't get even close to WE's functionality + many other reasons, that I won't be listing.
The only way it could've theoretically worked if all of the wallpapers were paid from the beginning, but then the one time purchase business model wouldn't make much sense and would be changed to freemium, which would make it a sort of a distribution platform, something similar to Steam.
Really the only option, which I think is fair, is to have a PayPal and/or Patreon linked somewhere, in the description for example, and if people really like your work they can support it.
I greatly appreciate the time you have just taken to share your thoughts on this matter.
Also I created a TikTok account ;D https://www.tiktok.com/@awesome_live_wallpapers
