High GPU usage
Hey all

I've been looking into some preformance problems with my computer and notived that wallpaper engine is using 85% of the GPU's power! looking into this, I was told to set things to low settings, but that didn't seem to help. After that I tried to optimize my wallpaper, but never found out how to do it as I researched.

If anybody knows what's wrong with my sepcific wallpaper, please inform me and give me any information on how to fix it. The GPU doesn't have as nearly a difficult time with other wallpapers as it does with this wallpaper. Thanks!

below are some links to the walpaper and the original assests used to make it

Your wallpaper performs fine for me, what GPU do you have? Also, are you sure your GPU usage is really that high? If you use the Windows Task Manager to read GPU load, it's not showing the correct values most of the time, see:

oh ♥♥♥♥, I totally forgot to get back to you! sorry!
but yeah, I'm using AMD Radeon HD 7800 series

task manager still says up to 90% on this one though. 40% on a previous version, and then all others, it reads like 6%, so I'm wondering if it's an optimization issue, which I wouldn't know how to begin resolving

The 7000 series was first released in January 2012 if I am not mistaken, so it could be that it may just not be very good at handling these types of videos. If you want to optimize performance, you could try to reduce the framerate of the video (you don't have to go all the way down to 25 or 30 fps necessarily, maybe there is a good middle-ground to be found). Other than that, since it is a video, there is not too much room for optimization.

Oh man, rip lol

I'm getting ready to replace this PC anyways, but thanks for the advice lol! I bet it has to do with both the frame rate and high resolution of thr video

Yes, definitly. I have a pc i use for work with my wallpapers installed. It has a AMD 280x GPU and all my nicely looking x.265 encoded 4K-Vids run like ♥♥♥♥ on this machine because it´s lacking hardware acceleration for this kind of videos and the CPU is melting trying to decode the videos. So no hardware acc, no fun. ;-)

i had the 7870 xt with boost until 2 weeks ago it can handel wpe just fine with around 15% gpu usage

Wallpapers are pretty diverse from a technical point of view though. This specific video the user mentions has a very high framerate and relatively high resolution, on top of that it is likely using a different video encoding than things you may have tried with your card in the past. There are simply too many parameters to make general statements like "I had the same card and it maxed out at 15% GPU". Again, the user also writes that it's about the specific wallpaper linked above.

I'll try to mess with the video in after effects when I get around to it and reupload
