Try to play as other characters, enhance your equipment (more important than leveling up), and don't fight every enemy you run in to.

This *can* be a bit trickier for some of the other characters, but one thing I suggest doing while playing as Velvet at least is to set each attack button to (mostly) follow the same element type.

For example, with an Xbox controller, I color-code the attacks:
Y = Earth attacks
X = Water attacks
B = Fire attacks
A = Wind attacks

...with some changes or variations where desired/necessary. This will only really come into play as you begin to unlock more artes, but it's a decent baseline to help make sure you're stringing together attack combos that will target an enemy's weaknesses and avoid their resistances.

This equipment guide doesn't have any spoilers, but my combo guide does in that you will know who will join your team.

  • The fewer souls you have, and the more souls an enemy has, the easier it is to trigger status afflictions.

  • Break souls grant invulnerability frames while performing the move.

  • Velvet's minimum hp is 1 while she is theronized.

  • Artes with higher sg costs will have higher chances of having their special effects go off.

  • An enemy with attack down is 4x more likely to be hit with paralysis.

  • An enemy with arte attack down is 4x more likely to be hit with burn.

  • An enemy with defense down is 4x more likely to be hit with slow.

  • An enemy with arte defense down is 4x more likely to be hit with poison.

  • An enemy with focus down is 4x more likely to be hit with fatigue.

  • Exploiting every weakness an enemy has (so their enemy types and weaknesses have a yellow boarder around them) will trigger a weakness hit combo where all attacks are treated as a weakness. During a weakness hit combo, alternating between attacks that the enemy is normally weak to and normally resists will make it more susceptible to damage.

  • Get all of your equipment to +5 as soon as you are able to. This will give you the 4th initial soul and significantly change the pacing of battle.

  • The stun affliction does not work by probability, but by stun stacks. You will stun an enemy if you apply 1000 stun stacks. The amount of stacks applied depends on the arte used, weakness/resistance the enemy has, number of souls you and the enemy have, your focus stat, the enemy's focus stat, and guard charges you have saved up.

Okay, that's all I can think of at the moment.
