Cooking a dish heals the party and gives two buffs: one from the dish, and one from the character preparing it. Each character has three buffs they can choose between, but they only start with one unlocked. The others are unlocked by cooking with them a bunch to raise their cooking level. Additionally, each buff can be upgraded by further raising cooking level. Having stuff like +15% focus for everyone can be a big help! The buffs from the dishes don't kick in until you meet a certain trigger condition in battle, and only work once, but they can be pretty useful too, like increasing drop rates when you get a big combo, or restoring HP when someone gets low.

Turn it on once you have a ton of ingredients from expeditions, so you get a buff every battle and raise someone's cooking skill level. Leave it off and only cook when you want to heal or are about to fight a tough battle, if you don't have many ingredients.

I would also recommend leaving auto-cooking on. Stock up on ingredients (whichever ones are cheapest) and keep those dishes auto-cooking so that you can heal after each battle, gain buffs for your next, and level up cooking levels for your characters. And when you face a tougher battle, cook a dish that you think would be most useful to you. It's not a super big deal, but it certainly helps out every now and then as Lupus mentioned.

Along with that, it's also worth noting that there is a side quest that requires Velvet's cooking level to be level 20. Getting her cooking level to level 20 might take a while, so if you plan to do all of the side quests, it's something you should keep in mind. Good luck! :bienfu:

You will never run out of ingredients if you keep buying prickleboar meat and [the other ingredient I forgot what it's called] from the shop. It's cheap. And when you get your scout ship (somewhat early in the game, but not right at the start), you get more (free) ingredients. You just alternate ingredients to keep auto-cook on at all times.

I normally like cooking in games (don't know why, maybe because I like food?), but I think this game kinda overcooked the health regen side of things. Pun intended. I hardly use apple gel because it cuts my Grade down when I use items. I instead use Soul Break to heal, or get Laphicet/Magilou to auto-heal. (I don't rely on it though, just need the heal to keep me off death's door.)

But if you play on Hard or above, cooking buff is a must, especially if you fight Dangerous Encounters or Dire Encounters. (If you're on Hard, you're likely looking to fight those battles anyway; because anything on Normal and below are cookie cutters.)
