The big question!
Well as some might already know SG2 wasn't exactly praised for it's VA (though I like some of the voices and the fact there's a bunch of different dialects in there) and some even praise the devs for their great VA in Origins (which I can fully stand behind as being more unique and somewhat "realistic").

So the question is:

What are your thoughts on VA for Warlords, LGM? Is it gonna have VA, more of it (like chatter) or is it a waste of ressources if people don't enjoy it?

I imagine there will be some sort of VA for the story/campaign but what about freeroam play and missions there?

I'm not for or against any sort of VA. For me the meat of the game is and has to be the gameplay. But I was just wondering what thoughts you at LGM has on this subject?

I would recommend you to include a option to disable VA if possible (and skip cutscenes too), in case somebody truly doesn't like it. Better to give a good impression than force something on the player if the player doesn't like it.

Thoughts?

Btw; Personally I liked the ships computer voice but would wish there were a few more lines to it, mixing it up a bit. "Hostiles on radar", "enemies approaching", etc... several ways to say the same thing but with different lines. Perhaps codingwise it could be a sort of RNG based line. So the game would "roll a dice" to choose between lines in different situations. Doesn't have to be much or a full catalogue of warnings and such, but just a bit of difference can make the player (or to be honest, me) stay on their toes, immersed in the game and enjoy the feedback voice even more

Let's see...

Voice-overs in the main campaign - this might be a little surprising, but actually we're not planning on having a fully voiced main campaign. The reason is that the amount of text in this aspect is growing a LOT bigger. We're going for full dialogues (choices and everything), and voicing all those lines would be problematic. We'd love to have it voiced nonetheless, but realistically, this won't happen, although the dialog files themselves are already prepped for this possibility, just in case.

Voiced chatter - this is a different question. The plan is to bump this hundred-fold. And I don't mean just the bridge chatter. That is a given. Including what you've suggested on providing several lines that say the same thing in a different way. We're talking here about random chatter from NPC ships, stations, structures... This is the main target. I'll say immediately, that this won't be Freelancer style where the game assembled voice lines on the fly. In our case, it will be making choices on what will be said. We're going for volume.

Disabling voice - We learned our lesson in SG2 :D. Yes, disabling VO will be possible.

Sounds great, Danijel.

I really like that you're more focused on the chatter than campaign VO. This game is more and more intriguing as each day passes.

For me the voiced chatter is more important than a voiced campaign. So I'm verry happy that you will improve voiced chatter as described. That' s cool :) Fly safe! :spg2wolf:

There are actually two reasons for our change of focus:
  1. Forcing VO into main quests, means we have to send the finalized texts into recording early. Especially with the text volumes Warlords will have. That's problematic because it means form that point on, we're locked in and only minute changes are allowed. I'd personally like to avoid getting it cemented that early.
  2. Switching to voiced chatter means we'll bring the game world much more alive in general, which I really like :).

We're not discarding the idea of voicing the main quest in the end too, but it's not the primary focus :).

Its a shame that, it wouldn't be possible to let the community voice act your main story or side quests, and that you choose which ones you feel are good or not, I mean, do you have to be a voice actor to do a good voice? If you're able to talk decent english ( doesnt have to be fake english so just use your owna ccent, cause it fits in space imo ) and don't alter your own voice to much ( software could do this ) perhaps there are just really good people able to do this.

I mention this because there is a freelancer mod and also the mod for skyrim fully voiced by fans, and not all that bad.

Mark Hamill (Star Wars Saga) in addition to Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Michael Dorn (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Kat Cressida (Haunted Mansion), Dwight Schultz (Babylon 5), and Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) talk about how they brought the races to life.

^ This is voice acting done right!
Not that I expect you guys to hire these guys.
But wow just wow.
I was wondering why the game was 50$. Now I know.

I assure you, if I win the lottery before Warlords EA ends I will personally invest money and hire these people to voice over Warlords campaign:

David Duchovny
Mark Hamill
Gary Oldman
Tom Hanks
Ema Stone
Rooney Mara
Simon Pegg
Kevin Spacey
Tilda Swinton
Samuel L. Jackson
Tom Hardy

Wish me luck! :)

Scrap all those Zeno.

Get Werner Herzog instead. I love his german accent when he does voiceovers for his documentaries.

Or Udo Kier (the devil in disguise).
