"Dont Shoot Im Too Short!" Wrong
I really dont understand why this is labeled as a "Rookie Helmet" becasue in Nam' when someone said he was on "Short time" it meant the ending of his rotation cycle and nearing his DEROS'ing time. Even the picture which im sure that found this from the Marine was nearing his DEROS'ing time.

It's becoming abundantly clear that the devs haven't researched the war at all, which is really dissapointing.

I've noticed the order in which the US uniform items unlock is a bit weird. Why am I unlocking ragged, worn pants before a pristine, clean uniform with flak vest? Seems poorly thought out, but we can wear the uniform items any way we like once they're earned, so I guess we can work around it.

I'm mostly let-down by the tattoos we have available in-game, which are so wildly out of era that they make my head hurt. Once folks rank enough to start using those godawful tattoos, the game characters will actually end up looking like a bunch of hipsters from San Francisco LARP-ing the Vietnam War. Not to mention the Northern forces wouldn't have even had any tattoos during this era.

The style of US military tattoos in the '60s and '70s stems from one man: Sailor Jerry. His art is everywhere and would've been very easy to use as an inspiration. Instead we have full sleeves and tribal tattoos, just about the most ridiculously out-of-era tattoo styles that could have been chosen.

Some of Sailor Jerry's work during the '60s.

30-40 year old geek/hipster devs are not war historians. They should've hired Sgt. Elias as a consultant :-)

It's not hard to research if you are apparently aspiring to make an accurate game.

Agreed. I'm not knocking TWI/AMG, I dig their games and their attention to detail.

That said, when even a cursory glance through American military tattoo history in the 1960s-70s will get you to Sailor Jerry art, the devs decision to shoehorn in sleeve tattoos, tribal designs and full torso pieces totally mystifies me. It's just blatantly historically inaccurate and inauthentic, in a way that little else in RS2 dares to be.

I hope that with some constructive feedback to the devs, they'll consider maybe releasing some more appropriate tattoo options at the very least.

Could someone answer me what it means? The text on the helmet? "Don't shoot I'm too short"?

It's a message to the PAVN and Vietcong" "Don't shoot me, because I'm too close to the end of my tour of duty" AKA "My time remaining is too short"

If you're "short" it means you don't have much time left on your tour. (You only have a short amount of time left until you can go back to the world)

They researched "short time" enough to include it as a voice line.

Most everyone had a short timers 'calander' on their helmet cover or the band around it. Being short usually refered to when you were a 'two digit midget' meaning under 99 days left in country before DEROS. So when you were 'short' you were closing on DEROS date. And when you were under 30days the word was you were too short to shoot.....................
And 10days left in country you did not have to leave the wire if you did not want to, but again no one abandoned friends and usually did full tour.

The one day outprocessing was interesting. Find your duffle, dig out your Khaki's, short arm inspection, shower, shave, have khaki's cleaned and pressed (locals set up shop right there solely for that purpose), dress, bus to airport, wait for freedom bird, and hope don't catch a rocket or MG fire on take off, those Flying Tiger (contracted airline for inbound and outbound flights) guys who flew those outbound 707's stood them on thier tails and climbed to get out of small arms range, just because, your last look was usually the green highlands in the distance....................

Also 'short time' was a 50p romp with one of the local SPED's (self propelled entertainment devices)...figure it out.

TOD's were usually 365+5, so a year and 5 days processing in and out, and depending if wounded yout time in the field hospital 'did not count' towards total days in country, so recovering for 4 days in a field hospital for minor wound means you had 4 more days to do incountry 'if' battalion wanted to be a pain. But on the plus side, 2nd wound you were on the Freedom Bird within a week, if you wanted to leave. But few would leave the friends behind, just not done unless you completed whole tour.

Very interesting information. How do you know so much about this facet of the Vietnam war?
