Long Story:
We gotta go back a few years to when the mega server first became a thing. All it did was increase player counts and mess with the stated player count on the server browser. I’m not sure the largest it’s ever been but at one point it was running 256 players for quite some time. He was spoofing the server browser to state numbers over 1000 however including 1337 for a time.
Eventually the server settled on 128 players for performance reasons. It was also still lying about the amount of players on the server. It would say 127/128 even if the server was empty. Just to get players to join. This was already a shady move showing that the admin gave zero regard for other server operators. He just wanted people.
He started up a patreon to get people to donate. That didn’t work out very well and he then decided to run ads through the steam overlay to earn money to pay for the server.
This was where the problems started.
He didn’t use something like Google Adsense for the ads. He used some shady service with malicious ads on it. Some of these ads had automatic downloads as soon as they loaded. Didn’t even need to click on them. Clicking on the other ads was also a mistake. The steam web browser is also absolutely terrible with Zero security features and no way of knowing if you’re downloading something or not. Peoples anti virus software would flare up and this is where the story of “The mega server gives you malware” came from.
At the same time the admin of the server was getting into more trouble with the community itself. People were making threads criticising his behaviour in game and his admin practices as he went by the philosophy of “my server I can do whatever I want”. He would reply to these threads which just proved these individuals correct. He would also yell at TWI a lot. Eventually his behaviour managed to get him banned from every single TWI social media platform.
This made him mad.
Very mad.
He then made a mod on his server which made everyone level 99 as soon as they joined. This got his server taken down multiple times. He made multiple redirect servers to take him to the main server which he had hidden. At this point he knew 100% what his ads were doing to people so kept them up too. He confirmed this himself in posts on his own discord server. He was deliberately trying to sabotage the game. Not to mention the fact he needed money to pay for the server was also fishy. He wasn’t renting a server. He was running it from his own house. So there were no large monthly costs.
Eventually he disappeared for about a year. Came back only recently. Right now the only thing the mega server does wrong is it still lies about its active player count. Allegedly his behaviour hasn’t changed much either. But the server now doesn’t run ads. So doesn’t have malware.
"Nope not convinced!"
*mod says used to from ads*
"Wow that makes so much sense zomg!!1"
What's next, you conveniently gonna tell us all to play on the mega server now?
