What exactly is the meta of the game?
I am level 25 (being playing this for some time now) and i didnt really grasp the game i guess.

So is this game all about hiding and camping and picking off enemies from long distances?

Im always killed by someone hidden at a distance and i realized that it is very rewarding if i do the same.

I dont necessarily run out in the open and take efficient cover but the enemy is always too wide spread and pushing feels really tough.

I know i should invest a lot more time to learn the maps and know the game better but im pretty sure im missing a huge part of this game.

People hardly communicate and make team effort here in SEA and EU servers.

Please dont get me wrong, im not trying to trash talk the game or the players, if i really hated it i wouldnt bother to ask for help.

So if anyone can help me with what is the BASICS of this game, i would be grateful.

I cant attack, i cant defend, i lose almost all matches, i dont have problems with shooting mechanics, i just dont know what to do

first, you need to understand that this game will give you a slight PTSD whenever you play it.
By that i mean you will start to realise that gun and run will get u killed. This game isnt COD or BF, where running around and shooting will get u kills. No, getting into a bush deep enough into enemy territory that you can shoot at their backs is what you should do. RS2 is about ambushing. You are fighting guerrila tactics. If you are 25, try commander. Ask or if you can, put the marks yourself, and learn to use the commadner abilities. Learn which guns work in which situations. Learn how to dodge a flame thrower, Learn how to use a Sniper, Learn how to use traps, Learn how to be an efficient Squad LEader. ANd more importantly, Learn that unless its skirmish, Your actual objective is to get the points, not to kill enemies. Learn how to advance. Learn how to use smoke. Smoke is your only cover in RS2. staying behind a sandbag will get you headshoted. LEarn to stay in bushes and bayonet enemies. Bushes and camouflage are better cover in this game than sandbags. If they cant see you they can't shoot you. but if you're behind cover they can see you and can shoot you

Also please do your job if you go squad leader or commander. Communicate with your team/squad and try to stay hidden as both.

I've only played about 80 hours in this game, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm experienced, but far from being a complete expert on all game meta aspects.

I want to address some of the things you said.

The meta for this game is complicated, is the short answer. What you need to do in order to be effective is also complicated.

Camping "is" effective, but it is far from being the only effective strategy.

To give an example of me getting around camping: I just got the most kills one round on defense (we did lose the game) by having three or four separate occasions where I flanked defenders who were taking a point. At one point I killed 5-6 of them in a single room, two or three with my shotgun, a couple with my pistol, and even one with a melee attack. There was only a single enemy left in the room who managed to get me.

With all of that being said, here are some specific tips for you:

1. Stick with your teammates. Not so close that you'll risk you and five other people dying to a single grenade or explosive, but close enough that you minimize the chance of you being the only person shot at and that your teammates can cover you.

You can ignore this rule if you see a good opportunity to flank, but that's something you need more experience and a good "instinct" for in order to take advantage of.

2. Communicate with your team as much as is reasonable. While most people might ignore what you say, it definitely is helpful to call out major developments on the battlefield.

For example: calling out when there is a sniper picking off your team on a point from a certain location, or if you see a squad camped in a particular building, or if you need help from a commander (artillery or such).

3. In actual combat, make sure to always minimize your exposure to enemy fire, and find positions where you can see your enemies yet they cannot easily see you.

This might sound obvious, but it's super important and requires practice. This can involve certain things such as shooting enemies from 100 meters away from an open window, being stationary so that they cannot even spot you, then moving away to survive counter-fire. Or going prone in a bush when taking fire, often giving you time to return fire. I've survived so many battles by simply keeping my head down and not moving around too much, and people underestimate the value of stealth and good positioning.

4. Use all of the weapons and tools available to you, and use the right ones for the right job.

If you have an inaccurate weapon, use semi-automatic fire when at long range (the AK 47 in particular you should use in semi-auto mode if you're more than about 30 meters from your enemies). If you have the hunting shotgun and can fire only two shots, sometimes you will want to switch to your pistol to continue firing rather than bothering to reload. If you suspect enemies are camped in a particular location nearby, use grenades to clear them out. If you have traps, make sure to always have them placed in good locations. So on and so forth.

---

This game is difficult for a lot of reasons, but once you get the instinct for it, you can survive many battles. Improving your shooting skills will help to actually win fights, but having good positioning and good tactics will give you the advantage in almost every fight. I win maybe only half of the time when I start shooting at the same time as an enemy, but I end up killing more enemies than I die to because I'm better at positioning.

So focus on positioning and on using your weapons properly first, teamwork second, and actual shooting skill and map familiarity last.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Also, as squad leader, make sure you're providing a proper spawn for your team as well as marking targets for your commander to put down artillery. Commander you can play if you feel competent enough to do so, but it is very important that you know what you are doing if you are playing as commander, so I would always suggest being familiar with squad leader before you even attempt it.

There isn't really a solid meta. The game is well balanced, so almost every weapon, trap and stratergy is powerful in the right hands.

The post above this is accurate, so I reccomend you pay attention to it!

Everyone finds their own play style after a little while, they can change over time due to by new updates, maps and so on or may be almost completley unaffected. Play around with various strats, spend one game playing aggressivley with an M14, the next game try being tactical and flanking with an M16, keep experimenting and eventually you would find a play style that best suites you. Just make sure you are being benificial to the team, kills are not everything!

Communication is key, but only callouts, this isn't like Squad or ARMA, just tell your team any information that is important. If you want something, ask your team!

In short, find you own playstyle and be a good teammate, victory will follow!

My greatest ally in over 600 hours of playtime is my map key. I rebound it to one of my mouse buttons so I don't have to reach across the keyboard to use it. When recon is up, you have ESP and can navigate around the enemy in order to never been seen. When you don't have recon up, you know the exact positions of your teammates and those who have recently died, and can appoximate where the bulk of the enemy force is.

Meta is, binding "view map" to a key that is comfortable and easy to flick on and off on a wim.

attacking:
as SL try to get good positon close, behind or in the cap point if possible and stay alive (dont go for kills) mark for commander and if NVA make your tunnel
soldiers try to flush the point dont forget to use your nades and hope smoke nades are used by your team is good way to get closer or in the point and camp in a good positon or kill as many you can

at the beginning/closing in on a point play abit slower/saver until you close to the cap point. know a hiding point or good spot on the cap and go more agressiv on this positon and camp if not used nads by now throw them at the incomming defenders and get more nades from the dead

flanking is good but some one also has to cap sometimes just rush the point and get kills so your team mates can move up
if you flank may as sniper or mg find good position were you can pick off the enemies rushing to the point (saddly liked the maps more in Ro2 for flanking reasons)
or flank for the reason to get into a bilding from behind were enemies will less expect

learn the map dynamics were is the easy way e.g. at hue its wise to attack A first it seams to be an easier cap

defence:
know the maps know the good spots but really every were is good you just have to move and not repeek the same positon (switch positions fast) MG need to find a good position were he is not killed first (same sniper) and can suppress them but i nearly all the time have the bipod folded and use it as spray and pray even i have good cover to build up my MG (mg was more fun in RO2) allways know a switching position in case a nade comming at you
go in to position check for next save position scan for contacts and dont be easy prey for snipers (and remember your nades and traps)

allways check your map were are your friends and if reccon is up you know check enemies also if arty is called from commander its wise to check were it lands so you not get team killed

a sraigth runnig dude is easy to hit than a bit zigzaging one if you start taking shoots try to find fast cover then peek and kill really fast or unpredictable or wait abit he will may forget you and try to hear were his shoots comming from and get him (again nades if in range if in range may he throw his also be ready)

The meta is mostly on the map level rather than on the individual level. If the commander tells you on the mic to attack B before A, or run back to D and defend it, it'll probably work.

This isn't call of duty you need to keep your head down and follow orders but also don't be rambo use tactics see that sniper flank him and take him out don't run into gunfire round around it but don't just shoot anyone you see look around for teammates who may try to defend their comrad also use grenades they may not kill them but it'll make them scatter and easier to pick off.

[X] Doubt

I've played in SEA server before, and I've seen people typing and calling out details, i.e. stragglers on B; spooky up (need AA); Squad 2/3 focus on defending B, etc.

My guess is you've been getting s**t TLs I guess.
