Does Mosin Nagant still sucks?
I'm a huge fan of bolt action rifles and came here from RO2. On release Mosin (infantry ver, sniper looks better) was underpowered peace of garbage. How it do work now? Still sucks?

The 91/30 I had in my closet still wasn't the greatest rifle. I done a trigger job, put on custom adjustable iron sights, but the corrosive ammunition that was used back when the rifle was first used ate the barrel up bad enough to cause accuracy issues with most modern ammo. The only load I could get decent groupings with was an 80's spam can of hot loaded Russian military 7.62x54R that was meant to be shot from an SVD Dragunov.

If you mean in-game balance instead of real life, well, it's Vietnam. There is a reason militaries have trended towards the assault rifle pattern of weapons post-WW2, they do a better job in common infantry engagement ranges. Mosin has no detachable mag, you must use stripper clips or load one round at a time. Holds 5 rounds, even 10 like the SMLE would have been much better for blind stripper clip reloads in a firefight. Slow rate of fire, made worse by bad bolt angle on the Mosin. Iron sights that are "battle-sighted" for 300 yards in WW2 so it shoots literally a foot high at 100 yards on the lowest setting. That is going against weapons that can hold 20-30 rounds in a quick detachable box magazine and fire as fast as you can pull the trigger, and one bullet most of the time will still be enough to kill most man-size targets? Bolt rifles are out-classed in modern warfare as we saw in Vietnam, do not expect more out of them than what they really are.

As a side note the advantage US forces had in WW2 with the M1 Garand would have been greater if the designer was allowed to put on a high capacity box magazine like he wanted from the get-go instead of that terrible en-bloc thing, and in the end we ended up doing that with the M14 anyway.

One shot to the torso usually does the job for me.

There was no one shot to the torso on beta and release, that's great. Thanks

There was a bug early on where the damage for all rifles was very low. Unlike the AK, you can trust the Mosin to kill in one shot unless you hit a foot.

I am quite positive he is asking from in-game perspective, as it's not like you have to worry about ammo quality, field maintenance of weapons, technical design pecularities of weapons, logistics, someone sleeping on the job, problems of chains of commanding and plethora of other IRL issues in the military.

As for the op, Mosin is awesome. Unless you manage to hit someone in the arm or below thighs, you are very likely to get one kill for one shot.

From an in-game perspective, I literally just got the game last night. This is my 2nd round ever and all I used was the plain M16 with the short magazines:

I could not do that with a Mosin. Slow bolt cycle and low magazine capacity just doesn't do for modern warfare. I double-tap targets, have high mobility, go cover to cover, and play peekaboo tricks on enemies trying to outsmart me. Each magazine lets me at least suppress an enemy if I cannot kill them. I keep it in semi-auto of course. One of those kills was a bayonet, felt REALLY good. Needless to say I love this game, I shoot a lot and do the occasional local rifle competition and the sounds are great!
I love the Mosin, Its accurate and powerful, one hit is all you need.

Everyone has their own playstyle, I prefer to flank, fire off a couple of shots and reposition, the Mosin is perfect for this, two shots, two kills and I am gone before the enemies get the chance to shoot back. Its range also allows me to engage from greater distances, the further away the gunshot is the harder it is to locate where it came from, so missing shots isn't as big of an issue, I would almost allways have time to chamber a second shot before they return fire, and one shot is all you need to kill or seriously injure someone.

However, I agree that it is outclassed in most situations, there is a reason why it is no longer in millitary service. If I choose to play in a more conventional way, I almost allways go for the SKS or Kalashnikovs, but I do sometimes take the Mosin out for a bit of fun or aim practice if I feel like it.

it's OHK 9/10 times, but i had situations when i hit a guy 3 times in limb and he was still alive, but it was just bad luck (or hell of a good luck for that guy)

I just put a bayonet on it and use it as a sword.

It certainly has its flaws and it is (relatively speaking) "weak" weapon compared to majority of weapons available due certain shortcomings, but it is not too hard to achieve high-ish kill ratio with it overall, let alone still play aggressively with it. It depends more on how methodical you want to be and how much you are willing to be punished for simple mistakes. Then again, the fact even weak options in RS2 are serviceable and valid adds up to fun of the game so it's not just monotonic flowchart all of the time.

Main problem is related to RS2's netcode and hit detection, using bolt based riffles makes you really notice how wonky it is, amount of times i was close to getting 5 kills with one strip but then got screwed over due to the netcode and hit detection is just too often, having the 5th or 4th shot simply not register on an enemy that's standing still while even a big fountain of blood is shooting out of him where you landed the shot is agrevating. If that got improved, bolts would perform better but of course still get crushed by more proper modern riffles of that time which make sense. Bolts are outdated and will always be outperformed, especially in a game where 1 to 3 shots drops you.

i just got One Shot - One Kill achivement (get one kill with every round in Mosin clip) yesterday, more than that i even bayoneted the sixth one. It's a hard gun to play with, but it's very fun because of it.
ETucc Nov 18, 2018 @ 3:07am
Mosin was always the strongest gun in the game. Git gud.
