As of last patch they removed them due to the fact that in reality soldiers didn't carry one in combat.
Really?

first hand sources from men in my family say... they dropped them at the first sign of a fight, because you dont want an extra 60-80lbs on your back when you're trying to fight in the jungle.

They would drop rucks when entering a firefight and would gather them back up afterwards.

lol you dont go into combat with a ruck, you drop it first thing. You usually dont carry anything combat related in a rucksack, those go in your assault pack.

Thanks for the reply, but I would like to customize my soldier with a lightweight rucksack, sometimes...

Twi will add the backpack as a customization option

You've got to remember there's alot of different scenarios a firefight can occur. Attack at a Basecamp or when an ambush has been laid up then doubtful a soldier would have his backpack equipped. If he's ambushed whilst out patrolling then more than likely they'd have them but probably try to drop them when they had a chance, might be pretty impracticable if hugging the floor avoiding enemy gunfire though!

I hope they add them as a customization option, I liked them.
