How does one use the radio operator?
90% of the games I'm in the commander stays back in spawn, and as far as I know, no one else can make use of the operator's ability

Someone enlighten me

you re a mobile radio, so the commander just goes next to your back and uses the radio
most commanders tend to use the fixed radios which is fine except if you re a north vietnamese commander that at one giving point could need to ambush in an objective

the problem is a lot of radio man don't understand they have to follow the commander, and not the other way around.

works both ways, some commanders seem oblivious to the radio man

You don't need radio to use ambush deploy you can run into a cap popping smokes pull map up and select it. It's quite fun if large number deploy

what i meant before is that some of them stay at the fixed radios, ruining the potential of him being already near or inside the point you want to defend/attack

My take: ask the commander in chat if he wants a radioman. If he doesn't, you're a rifleman with a pair of (extremely useful) smoke grenades. If he does, grab his belt and follow him wherever he goes. Some of the best matches I've had in this game consisted of nothing but keeping pace with a lunatic who couldn't trust his squad leaders to put down good arty marks. You get into the most interesting situations lugging a PRC-25 around :-)
So is the Radio man class useless ??

How I understood it, is that they're rifle men with smokes instead of Frags and a gimmick barely anyone uses

indeed, but commander got priority. The best thing to do is generally to signal yourself to the commander, or ask for a radio man... generally, it end working well.

Yes and yes.

Some won't even stop when you are right next to them using them. The other day I had a guy that would move a few feet every time I got close enough to use so the radio would stop working. But following the radio could work if they stop when they need to and know where to go.

No you don't but you are less effective as a TL without your radio for a number of reason.

Generally when i do the commander i use the radioman only if i'm in the North Team, but yeah, you have to follow your commander if he need you (you get 25 points when the commander use your radio)

A big thing of radioman is to respond quickly - most of the time (especially if attacking) there's little need for the radioman to be hugging the commander all the time but then occasionally something (eg AA) needs to be called in NOW and if you're closest to the commander you need to help the team by getting to him ASAP.

Furthermore some radios are in worse locations than others (eg defending A&B on A Sau) so there might be a need for a radio on one cap but then not the next

The other thing is that if you're radioman with the commander then you need to act as a sort of bodyguard as he will likely just have his head in the map so its up to the radioman to be heads up and cover him
