Can rifle caliber rounds penetrate helicopter glass or do damage?
I see people shooting them with small arms all the time but does ti actually do anything? It seems like I unloaded 80 rounds into a loach flying towards me yet he just scooted off

Killing pilots with a mosin is the best thing ever. Altho I have to admit that helos are really annoying to get rid of without good rpg hits beacuse pilots tend to know where dhhks are anyway and not much else doing anyhting to them.

Yes, small arms can damage helicopters. I've wrecked Loaches and Hueys with Type 56, DP28 and RPD in the past.

Yes, small arms can definitely mess with a chopper's day. You can end up hitting the pilot, damaging the chopper, or just making him have to stay on his toes and stay higher up, making him less able to focus on killing your team.

Things small arms can do to a helicopter in RS2, based on my experience:

- damage windscreen
- damage and destroy rotors (main and tail)
- damage engine/transmission/driveshaft
- wound & kill pilot(s), crew and passengers

While RPGs, machine gunners and folks operating the DSHKs have primary responsibility for firing at helicopters, ANYONE with a rifle or SMG should always shoot at them when within an appropriate range. If a good portion of a Northern team is concentrating fire at helicopters, it tends to make the pilots' jobs a lot more complicated.

There are times after a round of playing NVA that I find I'm instictively almost firing at the friendly choppers in the next round!

Always shoot at them - killing pilots, crew and passengers is extremely satisfying, and even if you miss the people, the damage often forces them back to base

Even pistol calibers (out of SMGs) can damage the loach and penetrate the canopy. I don't think they do much damage to the huey or cobra though, they might still take out the pilot.

Killed a loach pilot with a pistol before. Sort of hard to do... Oddly the windscreen seems to stop shotgun pellots. I am unclear just what is going on with the glass. None of these choppers have armored glass in reality. Its just your usual safty glass. Although glass is known to deflect low velocity stuff pretty easy unless it hits square. I really have no idea what is going on with the glass and small arms. What I do know is that all these choppers take an unrealistically large amount of small arms fire and can keep going. Have to hit the special golden spots. Sort of not like what happened in this war at all. It the course of the war 1000's upon 1000's of choppers where battle damaged, shot down, or total right offs do to nothing more than 7.62 x 39 and 7.62 x 54 rounds. Game sure does not show that. It sure as hell NOT RPG's that brought down all the battle lost choppers in Nam.

Shotguns and pistols can even bring down choppers. Anything will damage it. Back when you were able to fire your weapon on the landing pad it didn't take many m1911 rounds to destroy the engine of a cobra. Took less than a magazine.

Need to be able to throw a grenade into it after you shoot the glass a few times.

Though keep in mind that the pilots have higher "resistance" to bullets than normal GIs, aka they take more bullets to kill, IIRC.

Also, from what some people mentioned, the standard grenade/WP can't damage the helicopter.

I wonder if flamethrowers can? That'd be a bit odd having guys sitting still while burning, so I imagine it doesn't do anything. Besides, unless you're trying to teamkill, there's no reason a flamethrower should be burning a helicopter.

Easy way to test:

Can napalm burn a heli?

If yes, than technically flamers can.

If no, then no.

Technically you can shoot down a spooky with a makarov if you tried.
