US Gunships were UH-1B's, C's and M's. Now you may just think there's slight difference between all the versions. For the most part you'd be correct they mostly all got minor differences.
However the UH-1 Designation is simply a military designation. If we go to the manufacturer and see their designations you'll find two. The Model 204 and the Model 205. Completely different hull deisgns. The UH-1H has the Model 205 hull. While all the US gunships had the Model 204 hull. The 205 is signficantly larger than the 204. The 205 being the dedicated troop carrier while the 204 wasn't designed for troop carrying in mind. The project for the huey started in the 50s and didn't even consider troop carrying. It was for evacuating wounded, for use as a general trainer and for general use as a utility helicopter.
The main Troop carrier back then was the H-34. Which was kinda rubbish compared to the hueys. The army wanted a bigger huey. The other advantage being you could also fit more stretchers in a larger chopper. So they extended it by about a metre and you got the Model 205. The 205 could also carry an entire 10-12 man squad (squad size shrunk to 10 from 12 in the vietnam war). Prior to that you could only squeeze in 9 passengers.
The Model 205 became the main troop carrier while the 204 served most other duties. Filling in most of the time. The Australians got a load of the large hueys and when they wanted an attack chopper that had to work with what they got. Which was to modify the UH-1H into the bushranger.
All american gunships were the smaller design. More nimble but the B and C versions didn't have very powerful engines. Only the later M did. Even that was only the same engine as the UH-1H.
