So....when does the game get fun?
I first played Red Orchestra when it was a mod for UT2004. I played the hell out of RO:Ostfront. I hated the system in RO2 where your avatar gained ability over time, so I skipped that, and I think I've maybe played 3-4 rounds of RS1.

At what point does this game actually get fun? I've played maybe three to four times so far, and each time seems an exercise in futility. I can't see any enemies anywhere. I die about every 20-30 seconds. I get killed seemingly at random by no one.

I've got a brand new, top-of-the-line machine, so it's not a problem with the rig itself. Like, I'm not suffering from FPS drops killing me or anything. I've got a decent connection, so that's not it. I just suck at the game.

I don't mind putting in some time to get better, learn maps, figure out how to spot enemies in foliage and stuff. I can already kinda do that decently. The issue is I never seem to even have the opportunity to spot them before >thunk!< I'm dead. It's hard to learn a game when you spend the bulk of it in a respawn queue or running to get somewhere so someone can kill you and send you into the respawn queue again.

One player on the last server said the game gets good after putting in about 50 hours. I don't have 50 hours to blow on a game waiting for it to actually start entertaining me. I have a job, a wife, and a 3-year-old. I get maybe 2 hours a night to play anything. So, realistically, what's the learning curve here? Is it really gonna take 50 hours of getting my ass shot off before this game becomes fun? Or is the learning curve, in fact, shorter than that?

It probably actually takes closer to 49 hours to learn the maps and where to go/where to look. So it's not quite as steep as you said.

Yeah, but seriously, is it that bad?

Yeah.

Sheesh.

It’s been a while I’m just coming back to the game. But honestly I’d say it took me personally about 5-10 rounds on each map to get a solid idea of where to go/look enough that I was at least killing as much as I got killed.

just remember when ur defending u should go and stay on the objective.

and always stay or move behind cover. running out in the open is probably why you're getting killed. and also dont rush make sure its clear before u move up

Yeah, thanks, as I said, I played RO:Ost. I get the basic concepts. The issue I have is the learning curve for the maps, and the degree of visual clutter on them. Makes spotting the enemy a lot harder.

I just seem to get killed every few seconds, which, you know, makes it hard to learn the maps in the first place.

I follow other soldiers. I spawn on my squad leader. I get the concept of "GET IN THE CAP ZONE." I know how suppression works. I give ammo to my MGs. I know the basic concepts of the game. The issue is the maps and getting used to the visual spotting. That's what I'm asking about: how long does that take?

It didn't take me too long, you just gotta play reserved and pay attention, this isn't call of duty, and bad teams easily kill your fun

Really sounds like your trying to have fun with a game genra you dont enjoy. old 2004 graphic engine vs 2015(or whatever)

While its no where near as bad as games like Squad(And the other ww2 game they made) Its still realistic.

Example being, I steal enemies guns so they wont look at me when I shoot.

What's the game engine have to do with the genre? I enjoy the genre. I play online FPS games and enjoy them. I like when they have some realism to them, in broad strokes. My question is more about how much time I'm gonna have to invest in this game to get to a point where I'm not the proverbial fish in someone else's shootin' barrel. That's it.

If the answer is "You can pick it up in, like, 10-ish hours or so," cool. I can hang in. If the answer is "It's gonna take at least 50 hours of dedicated play, without playing anything else," then I'm gonna pass because, as I said, my daily gaming time is limited.

Some maps are definitely better than others and it depends on the player make up at the given time. It's kinda a chore but if you keep getting picked off at long range, the way to see at long range is to hold perfectly still and wait for pixels to move on your screen. Not my style generally. Choose one of the classes with smoke grenades, throw smoke, and move in for more close range action. See, smoke may be a visual hinderance, but it is at least leveling the playing field.

I've got hundreds of hours in the game and still learning better ways to do things. Still can't pilot to save my life. You can read some guides for some hard and fast rules and look at some gameplay videos like bofeity's. Movement and sound are huge.

50 hours is a reasonable figure for when you tend to give more than you get. 10 hours after some guides and videos will definitely suck less than it does now, but I won't be dishonest and say it is a substitute.

The rules of this game are a little different of those in the past with more of a focus on automatic weapons. Figure out what weapons suit you more. If you are having a hard time identifying people, stay back a bit more or in a prone position and scan for movement and tracers. Sometimes ill play with an insurgency-style gameplay mindset and get torn apart from being too ballsy with my movement and positioning. Make all your moves with purpose and try to work the flanks slowly.

While putting more time into the game will help you, I think they way in which you play it will make more of a difference.
