Bad helicopter controls?
As an Arma 3 veteran pilot of around 400 hours coming over to this games flight model was a big shock to me in terms of how the helis handle. I'm struggling pretty hard to get used to how to fly these things without crashing or ♥♥♥♥ing up all the time. Is there a way i can easily re-map controls so its similar to arma 3? or is there any way in general i can make flying a little more user friendly? Please forgive me if i sound ignorant about anything as i only very recently got the game.

Also just some tips on how to fly competently in general would be nice.

Youre lucky. Game doesnt appear to support joysticks. Unless I missed something.

Just got the game too. Arma3 flyer as well.

1) Turn on advanced flight model. It gives you much better control over what is going on.

2) Practice. You can go to the tutorials heli free range. It's just An Loa with LZ smokes here and there. Can't stress practice enough. The loach is the most forgiving so try that to start.

3) Take off. when starting your heli don't raise the collective untill the needles are in the green. you will take off faster if you wait for the helicopter to spool up.

4) Don't overstress the rotors. keep the needle with the "R" on it in the green you can do this by raising or lowering the collective depending on your maneuver. This should keep the helicopter flying at it's best. (In emergencies it may not apply.)

These are all the basic tips I have. Good luck.

Trackir doesn't recognize RS2

Just do exactly what potshott said

I do a lot of older sims as well as arma and a touch of DCS. Make sure helo controls are set to advanced, and they fly sweet as all hell. I’m pretty happy with the FM’s in rs2, only I find the Huey’s to be too light at times.

Advanced flight model is far better then the default.

I would piggyback off this and also recommend practicing on empty multiplayer servers as well. This is important because ping seems to affect the handling of the chopper. It just feels different when having to contend with latency.

This point is moot, however, if the devs have changed the netcode for the better since the last time I was flying.

I used to fly for a milsim group in Arma 3 and I had absolutely no trouble learning to fly in RS2 especially with a basic understanding of how helicopters work. Q and E for pedals and mouse and WASD for cyclic. Can't remeber what the defaults for collective are but for me it's left shift to raise and space bar to lower. There are no controls for throttle.

The pilot hud shows your current collective, altitude, speed and decent/acent speed. Switch to the advanced flight in order to be more precise with collective which is a MUST especially for landing.

Default helo controls are total trash. Just have to screw around till you find something that kind of works.

Flying in RS2 is bit harder than in Arma 3 but still easy....but yeah youre a veteran and blah.

Hmm... Have had some simularion players in game and they can own the battle with their skills with helos.

Not even close, sim guys are used to a HOTAS setup which doesn’t work with rs2. Arma flyers and similar games will fare the best
