as for the assault rifle part i have noticed that you should just hold the trigger down (While aiming) when you are attacking the enemy, i have had many instances when i have killed people with spraying that i havent even noticed since the bullets from M60 penetrate alot of cover and you also suppress your enemy or maybe even force him to take cover, giving you more room to manouver (i dont like the 200rnd belt for M60 since i like to have extra 100 rounds for it since MG gunners role is usually to suppress the enemy or shoot through walls to kill the enemy)
For the MG spots i would suggest that you dont use spots that will expose you to the whole enemy team, like top floor windows or rooftops since those spots are the 1st place where the enemy sniper will be looking for you, so i suggest you to move to the flanks of the map and find a spot where you can see the enemy movements in a certain area (like a house next to the cap zone that is a safe spot for the enemy to capture the point) since if you manage to lockdown a position like the main street in Hue City, that can prevent the whole US team from ever advancing past you and they will need to use smoke or call artillery on you, just to get rid of you and this will help your team since the enemy will be busy trying to kill you and not your team
The weapon is good to kill people hiding behind penetrable materials, shoot right and left like a film lol
Shoot the jungle so they get scared and delay them.
Finally this weapon is good to defend objetives, just wait and pull the trigger.
Here is a tutorial on how to use it lol I killed people I never saw haha

Dont forget to scream while doing it !!!
-Stay behind your squad's frontline men from a defensible position and cover their advance.
-Take a defensible position and suppress an enemy's advance.
-Assist in attacking enemy aircraft
I'm having a hard time taking up a good defensible position in most scenarios. Either I seem to be too far away, and I sit doing nothing, or I get a few shots off and get killed by someone else I can't see. What would help me the most is some good gameplay footage or some screenshots of good positions.
It's unfortunate that this is true.
What is it? Was the M60 this useless historically, or are the game mechanics borked?
It is the maps. Mutch more green allover. Spot finding is really hard.
Thats a good point, i was lucky to have a constant ammo supply from my teammates as a MG gunner in that game so i have to make sure that you actually get the full belt
*Edit" i just remembered that i had run out of ammo, then i fired like 60 rounds at the enemy when i got resupplied by a teammate and checked my ammo and it told me that i had over 50% of ammunition still in the gun, i would have to say that you only get 200 round belts as ammo once you select it from the role selection
I've been playing MG as my favorite class, and I find the M60 quite nice TBH (but it overheats very quickly).
Anyways, with regards to setting up, you always want to be in the back of your friends. Your job is to provide covering fire (and rain down God's fury on those VCs) while your teammates try to advance. This means setting up somewhere which provides good overview for the objective.
As Egro also mentioned, the muzzle flash of the guns are quite large. Not to mention the tracer rounds the LMG uses, it's usually quite easy to notice where machine gunners are located. Therefore, you want a setup position with at least a hardcover next to you, and some room to manuver.
Personally, I have several favorite spots for MG, both in CuChi and HueCity (I only figured out good spots for Hill 937 VC-side, while I couldn't figure out for the American side). Whenever I set up, I would take several shots (when necessary), and after about 20 to 30 shots, I'd move positions a little bit, so as to cover the same area while not being easily spotted.
While some people argue that the machinegunners' job is to shoot people coming, don't forget that the machinegunners are also the best in suppressing enemies, and suppressing enemies is useful for your advancing friends. The LMGs also have good penetration, so spraying the LMG once in a while is also quite useful.
Finally, with regards to advancing, if you have a good position, you won't find it necessary to advance so soon. I usually advance because my team has capped the objective, and the next stage is open.
This is probably the least useful advice as a machinegunner. Unless you're capping points, better switch to pistol
=
However, take my advice with a grain of salt. I am only 20 hours in.
