M14 auto-fire mode
I just wonder why M14 is only semi-auto in this game? According what I know they had auto-mode from beginning. Does anyone know shall that change in the game later? Plus there were versions with bipod either...
Yeah M14 in auto-mod is not too effective(as in all battle-rifles) but still its strange to see that in compare with RO2 where were even an useless auto variant of Tokarev rifle(but still fun-variant).

And yeah... A full-auto M16? What? I know that there is some full-auto versions of M16, but wasn't a regular M16 in those time a 3-burst guns?

The M16A1 has semi and full. It was the M16A2 that came out later in the 80s that changed full auto to a 3 round burst.

The A2(or A4) are the variants you often see in modern military games if the M16 being used has 3 round burst. The A1 and A3 have full auto.

As Jagdwyre stated, the M-16A1 was fully automatic. It was changed to three round burst in the A2 because the bean counters thought it was wasteful. Yes, the real M-14 was selectable to full-auto... why Tripwire has it set up to be semi-auto only I do not know. I do know that M-14s were converted to semi-auto only to be used as marksman rifles or upgraded to M-21 spec... but that was mostly AFTER the Vietnam conflict. To my knowledge, during the war, the vast majority of M-14s were still auto-capable.

This is a big gripe I have about the game in its current state, because it seems like a disconnect from reality for the sake of balancing the weapon out with the M-16. Thinking of it objectively, if the M-14 was fully-automatic, it would fire approximately 700-750 rounds per minute cyclic. That's very nearly the automatic fire rate of the M-16! The M-14 also has 20 rounds to a magazine instead of 18. The M-14 has very good accuracy as well, and increased damage over the M-16. If the M-14 was fully automatic in-game, the only disadvantage in using the M-14 over the M-16 would be more sluggish handling, and a significant increase in recoil. If they made the M-14 absolutely hellish and damn near useless to fire in full auto (as it should be), it might keep some players away... but I bet there would still be more players using the M-14 than the M-16.

All that being said... I still want the option for it to be fully automatic in game. If I want my first shot to land on target and the rest fly skyward and land in Cambodia... if the game strives for realism in weapon design then I should have that option available :-)

Because the ones issued in the field in Vietnam were welded to single shot only mode. Records show that to get a full auto rock and roll M14 you had to convince the local armorer you needed one, that happened 3 times in the entire war.

Thank you for your reply Yoshiro, I had not seen any sources stating that the M-14 selectors were welded during its service in Vietnam. With that in mind, it may be advisable to add a line to the M-14's in-game description to explain why it is semi-auto only. This would easily relieve the confusion of the misinformed like me, and prevent further unwarranted complaints :-)

Would it be op anyways if there was auto burst in RS2
Page 45 of M14 Rifle History and Development (online edition), Lee Emerson:

In the U. S. military, the selector shaft lock was installed on most M14 rifles so that only
semi-automatic fire could be employed. However, the Table of Organization for the U. S.
Marine Corps required three automatic riflemen per rifle squad when the M14 was the
issue rifle. In Viet Nam, U. S. Marine Corps units such as the 1st Marine Division 1st
Reconnaissance Battalion and the Combined Action Platoons (CAP) were equipped with
selector switches on their M14 rifles in Viet Nam. Automatic fire was used in ambush
situations and by the patrol point man when making enemy contact.

(you can get this source for free online btw)

The game's maps already distinguish between USMC and US Army - I wouldn't mind an extra class for automatic rifleman or (if no new class can be rolled out), the pointman getting a fully automatic version of the M14.

Like every source that talks about M14s in Vietnam says they were restricted to semi auto only lol.

Every source I have had (mostly Vets) have said that the M14 was "horrible" in full-auto and they chose not to use it... not that it was a function that was completely disabled. Forgive me for taking veterans at their word. I had not seen the Lee Emerson text until today and I am still perusing it. Were there any other sources you wouldn't mind listing?

So we're getting so detailed as to bring up M14's being welded to semi in the war, yet the M16 is reloaded like some guy's having a dandy time on the range? Appalling aperture sight representation (old issue from RS1, at that)?

Yeah we aren't talking 1964. We're talking 1969.
There is not need to for a .308 full mentally disable switch, but still ,with the current rear aperture on M14 , it still makes players half mentally disable when shooting anything moving outside of 50 meter range

Is there a chance of having a un-lockable select-fire M14 in the game , similar to the AVT-40 in RO2 which can be obtain after reaching a certain class level, or as a upgrade for the orginal M14?

An M14 on full-auto is very hard to control.

And y can say this about every battle rifle.
AVT-40 on full-auto is even harder to control, its even is "not recommended" by developers of gun to use it in this mode. You can use it only if the squad has total lack of auto-firepower. But this gun still in the game, and damn it - it's hell of fun.
