While you wait - Vietnam War movies you may not have seen
Most everyone's seen Apocalypse Now and We Were Soldiers, but there's a deep well of films drawn from and inspired by the years of conflict that raged when Vietnam was on the front lines of the Cold War.

It's important that we remember all those on both sides who tried to do the best they could in the midst of a confusing and pointless war.

Enjoy the trailers and seek out the films if you find them interesting!

The Quiet American, one of my all-time favorites, based on a famous book. Explores the covert American actions that helped to overthrow the French colonial government and ignite the wider conflict. Earned Michael Caine an Academy Award nomination.

Good Morning Vietnam! Tells the story of the famous AFR broadcaster Airman Adrian Cronauer. Brilliantly satirical.

Hamburger Hill. The history of the desperate and wasteful Battle of Hill 937 gets put to film by John Irvin. A brutal story of American infantry ordered to assault a fortified mountain that was of no strategic value.

Casualties of War. One of the darkest Vietnam War films made. Inspired by the widespread crimes committed during the war, fittingly directed by Brian De Palma. A profoundly unsettling film.

Dead Presidents - The Hughes' brothers take on the Vietnam War. Tells the story of a group of friends from the Bronx who ship off to war, then come home to find a different country than they left behind. A wild and intense story with a lot to say about America.

Platoon - Oliver Stone's first take on the Vietnam War, intended as a direct counterpoint to 1968's The Green Berets. If you haven't seen it you probably should make time for it. Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe crush their performances.

Born on the Fourth of July - Oliver Stone adapts Ron Kovic's famous story of patriotism, service and activism. A scathing indictment of the near-abandonment of many injured veterans by the government.

Heaven & Earth - The final and arguably most sophisticated of Oliver Stone's trilogy. Tells the story of a Viernamese freedom fighter as she struggles to survive amidst the chaos of the American intervention. A very different and captivating perspective.

Excellent! I almost included that one myself. Love that "found footage" style.

Hamburger Hill was a flop but is a very interesting movie about the war. It is based on real events. It is both accurate and not.

Agreed. Has its moments and is well written and acted, but they botched the tone a bit.

What a horrific situation that was... the US leadership threw soldiers at a fortified position of no consequence. They could've just gone after it with airstrikes and artillery, but instead chose to send infantry up in a frontal assault. Absolutely scandalous.
