I prefer GP100/MP-412 as a starting or a backup weapon only, but Saiga is my favorite for (almost) every situation. It's an amazing semi-auto shotgun with buckshots which can be turned into a quasi-DMR. Not to mention you can attach a PSO to it. Sucks that there's no threaded barrel upgrade, uh.
I like the GP100 because it weighs half a kilo.

Dogs will start circling you so if you get caught up you can rely on this behaviour and it should help you target one. I've noticed mutants stick to their own area on a map so if you run away for long enough they will eventually stop pursuing you and turn around. A mod that makes mutants chase you all over the map without any invisible boundries would be interesting.
Another good tactic with dogs and packs of mutants in general are grenade launching rifles. A single M203 or Vog-25 can save you hundreds of rounds of bullets but this can be a waste if you could have avoided the dogs in the first place.
