Kind of. As far as I can tell the Senran Kagura series is mostly split into two sub-series: The Main series and the Versus series.

The main series would be the 3DS games, the original Skirting Shadows, Burst (which is a 1.5 version of the original with the new Crimson Girls campaign), and SK2: Deep Crimson. These focus solely on the Hanzo Academy and the Crimson Squad. It is also important to note that Chapter 1 of Deep Crimson is a retelling of the final chapters of Burst.

The Versus series (as the name implies) are the games with Versus in the title: Shinovi Versus and Estival Versus (With Bon Apetit being a further spin off). While they do take place after Burst, they don't follow the same storyline as the main series and thus far is the only games with the Gessen Academy and the New Hebijo Girls.

So to answer you're question: Deep Crimson is more of a sequel to Burst, while the versus games are another take on the storyline. At least that's what I've gather, I've only played the 3DS games.
As CRES said but i just want to add that this game takes place 6 months after burst, so it still happens after Deep Crimson.

From what I heared you should get the general idea of relationship between Hanzo and Homura Squad. The other two schools joins now, so they will be properly explained in story, I think.
And, depending on character, they will also more-less mention they backstories, so you should be fine.

I see. Thanks for answering. So, here's another question:

As you already noticed, I never played any SK game. I never took a time to watch any videos on youtube. Main question is: Compared to other hack&slash games, near where exactly would Senran Kagura games be put? From what I saw, it looks more like Samurai Warriors games than other games like Dynasty Warriors or Devil May Cry.

They are similar to Musou games with some major differences. Stages are smaller. The only objective is to defeat every enemy. And there is a focus on aerial combat.

Think Dynasty Warriors but more in a Beat'em up style set up. Instead of large maps with multiple objectives to complete, SK is more about smaller areas and having to clear rooms of enemies before proceeding.

Ok so for what it's worth, I've only played the 3DS games. Is there anything I need to know, lore-wise, before getting into it? Or is it a good entry into the 'Versus' series?

I don't understand why they made those games for the 3DS. Such a waste of potential and opportunity. The 3DS graphics suck so bad. It probably don't even know what's anti-aliasing. Playing games on that junk make me want to stomp on the device, put gasoline on it, and burn it.

Senran Kagura started on the 3DS, and the reason why was because Kenichiro Takaki wanted use the 3D technology to view boobs in 3D. Further proof that this man is awesome.

The creator wanted to see boobs in 3d.

"Playing games on that junk make me want to stomp on the device, put gasoline on it, and burn it"

Then why did you bought it?

"The 3DS graphics suck so bad. It probably don't even know what's anti-aliasing."

Deep Crimson character models look better than the Estival Versus ones.
And no console game since the start of this generation knows what AA is.

If you played both then you should be fine, cause either you know what you need or learn it now.
The anime is just another way to understand the forementioned general relationship between Hazno and Homura girls.

This game is the first one that's still officially considered Non-Canon(since officially only the games released on 3DS are canon as of now). It came out after Burst came out and before 2 came out. Also highly doubt this will ever become canon, as the character development and relationship development will likely be non-existent, will be most easy to identify from Hibari's character and the relationship between Mirai and Yagyuu.
To answer the question: You come from the canon to the first non-canon, just like me, so you'll be 100% fine.
Don't listen to the non-sensical stuff in this case that Bethezer says above me. And SRY, but yes, it is just that; non-sensical.

That I repeat the question above - what you should know, then? They don't know each other? Homura Squad ain't gettin' along with Hanzo girls? Or is there something else?
By all means, correct me, cause I say what I stubled across. Sadly for me - it will be my first SK game.

Ah, I see. Well, I haven't played Shinovi Versus myself yet, so I don't know how much of the stuff from Burst will be important. Gessen and the new Hebijō-Girls likely are unkown to the Hanzō-Grils, at least on a personal level. The old Hebijō-Girls are those from the Homura Squad. They became Renegades and then turned into that Squad. Homura Squad and the Hanzō-Girls know each other, but the relationships they've got differ(mostly not that bad at the end of the 1st game through) and they're "destined" to be opposed to each other since they're Good Shinobi and Evil Shinobi(these terms sound bad, but Kagurapedia says this was used for the official translation, so yeah ^^"). That's most that one would need to know between them, I guess...I don't know how much this game explains, as I said, through.
Additionally, the Anime also would give a rough(although rushed and with omitted/shortened/at that time not existent(old Hebijō) backstories) idea of what happened in the first game, even if in comparison it's rushed and way too much on the fanservice. Although I don't really remember how good or bad the relationship between each "pair" was portrayed there...
OmegaFatalis May 31, 2016 @ 5:16am
IIRC at the start Hanzo and Crimson Squad are friendly rivals. They aren't trying to kill each other anymore. Gessen and new Hebijo are new players introduced in this game. Homura's crew are familiar with some of the new Hebijo girls, but nobody really knows Gessen. You'll learn all this in the story. It's not that hard to follow.
