The main series would be the 3DS games, the original Skirting Shadows, Burst (which is a 1.5 version of the original with the new Crimson Girls campaign), and SK2: Deep Crimson. These focus solely on the Hanzo Academy and the Crimson Squad. It is also important to note that Chapter 1 of Deep Crimson is a retelling of the final chapters of Burst.
The Versus series (as the name implies) are the games with Versus in the title: Shinovi Versus and Estival Versus (With Bon Apetit being a further spin off). While they do take place after Burst, they don't follow the same storyline as the main series and thus far is the only games with the Gessen Academy and the New Hebijo Girls.
So to answer you're question: Deep Crimson is more of a sequel to Burst, while the versus games are another take on the storyline. At least that's what I've gather, I've only played the 3DS games.
And, depending on character, they will also more-less mention they backstories, so you should be fine.
As you already noticed, I never played any SK game. I never took a time to watch any videos on youtube. Main question is: Compared to other hack&slash games, near where exactly would Senran Kagura games be put? From what I saw, it looks more like Samurai Warriors games than other games like Dynasty Warriors or Devil May Cry.
The creator wanted to see boobs in 3d.
"Playing games on that junk make me want to stomp on the device, put gasoline on it, and burn it"
Then why did you bought it?
"The 3DS graphics suck so bad. It probably don't even know what's anti-aliasing."
Deep Crimson character models look better than the Estival Versus ones.
And no console game since the start of this generation knows what AA is.
If you played both then you should be fine, cause either you know what you need or learn it now.
The anime is just another way to understand the forementioned general relationship between Hazno and Homura girls.
To answer the question: You come from the canon to the first non-canon, just like me, so you'll be 100% fine.
Don't listen to the non-sensical stuff in this case that Bethezer says above me. And SRY, but yes, it is just that; non-sensical.
By all means, correct me, cause I say what I stubled across. Sadly for me - it will be my first SK game.
Additionally, the Anime also would give a rough(although rushed and with omitted/shortened/at that time not existent(old Hebijō) backstories) idea of what happened in the first game, even if in comparison it's rushed and way too much on the fanservice. Although I don't really remember how good or bad the relationship between each "pair" was portrayed there...
