First time playing ever. Classic or Enhanced?
As the title says, I will be playing this videogame and was wondering if I should start with the Classic or Enhanced edition.

Classic runs in dosbox, so it's way more cpu intensive. Enhanced runs natively in windows, and has mouselook and a widescreen mode. Other than that they're exactly the same

Does that mean that the movement controls in Enhanced are still the same as they were when the game first came out and not replaced with WASD?

WASD works fine

Oh, good. No offence to old school gamers, but moving the curser to the top, bottom, left and right of the screen and clicking to move is one of the worst ways to control movement that I’ve encountered so far. Thanks for the confirmation.

There's no reason to play the Classic version whatsoever really, except for people who want to to change the MIDI used to play the music.

Enhanced is literally the best version available right now until Citadel (Unity Engine port) and System Shock by Nightdive comes out.

Absolutely play the Enhanced Version. It is literally the original game only with very good quality of life changes. As others stated it runs well, natively in windows and looks as good as the original graphics are ever going to get.

More importantly it has actual mouse look and WASD controls that make way more sense than the crazy original controls. The game's original controls are ridiculously obtuse. The classic version is a nice added bonus if you want to compare it. But definitely play the Enhanced Edition. It is so much better in every way.

You're very welcome! I hope you enjoy the game. It's a bit rough around the edges but considering it's from 1994, it's mind blowing how ahead of its time it was. Tons of fun. Yeah you won't be missing anything by not playing the Classic version so no worries. The narrative and story are the same. Hop right into the Enhanced Version and enjoy yourself good sir. :gs_joy:

Just be sure to toggle the full-screen option so you don't feel like you're walking with a submarine viewport. You can enable mouse-look with E as it enables/disables your mouse-look.

Originally a simple way to drop the system requirements for the game. A clever little idea, but obviously with todays computers not an issue. A fun bit of trivia though.

That's cool.

Classic has awful controls just like Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 before it and Enhanced allows you to edit the config file to allow much better input options.

It also comes with the mouselook mod used in the old but sadly obsolete System Shock Portable DOSbox game before it. which is a huge help because it felt like I was operating a first person crane game without it.

"If the controls feel like you are steering with your elbows, it can ruin almost any game." Ross Scott, original Strife Game Dungeon. (Chocolate Strife running through GZDoom as Strife Veteran Edition wasn't out back then.)

And it is worth mentioning that you can change the resolution in the ini-file. I did that to get the highest possible resolution for widescreen (I can only go until 800x500 for widescreen without crashes and glitches).
